One of Ravel s earliest works Jeux d Eau was written for solo Piano in 1901. It is dedicated to Gabriel Fauré under whom Ravel was studying at the time. The title can be variously translated asFountains or Water Games. It was inspired by a piece by Lizst of the same name. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is often considered after the death of Debussy in 1918 to be the leading Frenchcomposer of the 1920s and 30s. Earlier in his career he had caused consternation in the highly conservative pre-war French musical establishment with his unmistakable and highly original style.
