Par CANAT DE CHIZY EDITH. Le titre est évocateur: il s'agit de mouvement. Au fur et à mesure de mon travail s'est imposé de façon de plus en plus insistante la nécessité d'une musique en perpétuel mouvement. Une musique qui procède plus par mutation que par développement, une musique à multiples facettes, changeante, irisée, insaisissable. Je parle de nécessité car, en réalité, je ne sais pas trop pourquoi je suis amenée à une telle écriture. Cela relève d'une poussée intérieure, quasi biologique, où il s'avère impératif d'exprimer par là une puissante énergie. Mes dernières oeuvres en portent la trace: Siloël (ange de l'énergie), Hallel (louange), Exultet, Vivere, Moving. Ce propos n'est pas sans poser de problème. Car comment donner forme au jaillissement initial sans l'altérer. Si la facture est trop élaborée, le matériau reste inerte. S'il prend le pas sur la structure, l'oeuvre s'effiloche. Bref, il s'agit de rester sur la ligne de crête. Surtout, ne jamais se laisser enfermer ni par un système, ni par une forme, ni même par une idée: dès que l'un ou l'autre sont exposés, s'en échapper, quitte à y revenir, mais s'en échapper pour aller vers ce qui n'est pas prévu ou prévisible. Il en résulte une forme issue directement du matériau et des exigences de son évolution. Une forme souple comme une liane, épousant les pleins et déliés d'une courbe aux élans inattendus. Il en est ainsi de ma démarche personnelle: échapper à toute tentative de classification. Moving signifie mouvant, mais aussi émouvant. Autre difficulté: celle d'émouvoir en laissant tous ses droits à la logique sonore tout en l'imprégnant de son propre imaginaire. Emouvoir sans tomber dans le 'pathos'. Maurice Ohana disait: 'Méfiez-vous du sublime'. Car dans certaines situations, le pathos prend le pas sur la musique et l'étouffe. Il y a là aussi une très subtile alchimie à découvrir qui quelquefois nous dépasse et arrive quand on ne s'y attend pas. Cela peut s'appeler la grâce.

La composition a pour thème l’immense capacité humaine à surmonter de telles catastrophes et envisager l’avenir de façon positive. Elle débute justement dans un climat optimiste comportant de vives couleurs orchestrales et des passages syncopés. Les cors et les euphonium introduisent bientôt une fanfare en forme de choral à laquelle répondent des bois pétillants. L’ambiance s’apaise jusqu’à ce qu’unsaxophone alto introduise un court extrait de The Sun Will Rise Again, du même compositeur, une pièce écrite pour collecter des fonds en faveur des victimes du désastre de 2011. Le climat change hâtivement lorsque les cors introduisent un thème noble par-dessus des fioritures exécutées par les bois. Vient ensuite la principale section vivo de la pièce, qui se caractérise, encore une fois, par des syncopes très marquées dans le cadre d’un thème fleuri assuré dans le registre grave des bois. Cette mélodie fait l’objet de divers développements par tous les pupitres de l’orchestre jusqu’au retour triomphant de la fanfare soutenue par les cuivres. L'idée d'une chorégraphie est venue se greffer par la suite alors que j'étais en résidence de compositeur à Metz, sur la proposition de Susan Buirge, également en résidence à Metz au même moment que Joëlle Léandre et moi-même. C'est ainsi que j'ai eu l'idée de cette Danse de l'aube. Ce titre fait allusion au combat de Jacob avec l'ange, texte de la Genèse: Jacob resta seul et quelqu'un lutta avec lui jusqu'au lever de l'aurore . Ce passage est généralement interprété comme étant le symbole de la lutte avec Dieu que Jacob, la hanche démise, a vu face à face cette nuit-là. I suspect that each of us has such a desert within himself, but that it depends on circumstances whether or not we choose to make the journey through it. Contact lays out a path that we can share. This music seems especially romantic to me, in the sense that the sounds have much to say about loneliness. There are moments where this album emphasises its own seriousness, then immediately afterwards invites us todance. Contact sticks out a hand, sometimes two, mostly to show the internal process of the composer - firstly the lack of fire and the abandoned longing for this, followed by the bewilderment that there is something that is still smouldering and that can be fanned into a blazing forest fire to burn away all the pain of desolation. For this reason it is also moving music - because it wants the recognition of the listener, wants us to feel our own desolation while the piano explores further depths and heights. At times a composition is almost carelessly abandoned and another one begun. Whoever looks closely at feelings and is honest with himself and the world is always a little cruel. But finally there is an end to that desert - he sees an oasis and also a beautiful hotel. Upon entering, he sees no-one, not even at the desk, but the reigning play of light and colour is of an otherworldly power. Maybe no other people are needed here and the beauty that prevails is enough. Then sounds of music arise and some people move across to the immense hall where a wing has been set up, behind which a man is sitting, his fingers moving across the keyboard. And only one thing is real: after desolation comes comfort. That person is you and that person is me. And that music is called Contact, directly from the soul of Van Nueten. Wasserman and her Make
Music Matter, Las Vegas
foundation, in
appreciation of her
tireless work in support
of music education. It
was premiered in January
2012, conducted by Col.
John R. Bourgeois.The
piece consists of a theme
and 4 variations;
although the theme is
original it contains a
phrase heavily influenced
by a 14-bar passage from
the Libera Me in
Fauré’s
Requiem. It is a
sequence that the
composer finds
harmonically compelling
and, although it is never
quoted directly, it
appears in altered form
in thetheme and each of
the variations. In the
original, the passage is
set to the words:
Quando cæli movendi
sunt et terra (When
the heavens and the earth
shall be moved) which
gave inspiration for the
title.After the initial
statement of the theme,
Variation 1
features the upper
woodwinds who play a
stirring melody and
accompany the Fauré
reference with florid
arpeggios. Variation
2 spotlights the
saxophones and lower
woodwind in a rhythmic,
modal waltz, whilst
Variation 3 is a
broad chorale for the
brass and percussion.
Variation 4 starts
with a fugue, which
introduces each section
of the band in turn
before the original theme
appears on the brass
while the woodwind
continue the fugal
figuration.

piece is the powerful
ability of mankind to
overcome such disasters
and look forward to a
positive future; it opens
in an appropriately
optimistic mood,
featuring bright
orchestral colours and
extensive syncopation. A
chorale-like fanfare is
soon introduced on horns
and euphonium, answered
by chirpy woodwinds. The
mood subsides until an
alto saxophone introduces
a brief quotation from
the composer's The Sun
Will RiseAgain, which
was written to raise
funds for victims of the
2011 disaster. The mood
soon changes and the
horns introduce a noble
theme under woodwind
flourishes. This leads to
the main Vivo
section of the piece
which is characterised
again by strong
syncopations as part of a
florid theme in the low
woodwinds. This melody
undergoes varied
development by all
sections of the band
until the horn fanfare
returns triumphally on
the brass. This is
extended and leads to a
faster coda which brings
together previous
material in counterpoint
to close the work in
optimistic mood.

of a theme and 4
variations; although the
theme is original it
contains a phrase heavily
influenced by a 14-bar
passage from the Libera
Me in Faure's Requiem. It
is a sequence that the
composer finds
harmonically compelling
and, although it is never
quoted directly, it
appears in altered form
in the theme and each of
the variations. In the
original, the passage is
set to the words: Quando
c''li movendi sunt et
terra (When the heavens
and the earth shall be
moved) which gave
inspiration for the

have an obsession with
the poetry of William
Carlos Williams
(1883-1963). In the
spring of 2016, I was
re-reading his Collected
Works and was struck by a
line in his poem The Well
Disciplined Bargeman. The
bargeman is carefully
rowing over the murky
water and then under the
Presence. Whatever there
is else is moving. Having
plucked my title from
WCW's poem, I have
attempted to capture that
same sensation of
attention being given to
what is not in the
foreground. The pitch
material is fairly
simple: steps going down.
The goal is for the
listener (and especially
the performers) to notice
what cannot be notated.
This work can also be
performed with an
optional drone on concert
E-flat. The work was
premiered by Jeff
Anderle, Kevin Tang,
Sophie Huet and Dan
Ferreira at the San
Francisco Conservatory of
Music on October 16, 2017
