This new work by Philip Sparke was commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Australian Army Bands Corps. “The Roaring Forties” is what seamen call the region between the 40th and 50th degrees of latitude in the southern hemisphere (due to the boisterous and prevailing westerly winds). A fanfare, chorale and an energetic vivo all capture this untameable region. Duration: 5:45.

This chart was a staple in the Buddy Rich Big Band library for a long time, spinning off of the incredible excitement of that band. Recorded on the CD Swingin' New Big Band by Buddy, this chart starts off roaring and never quits. Rich used it as an Opener for years. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on Tonight Show Band, Vol. 2 (Amherst), this chart won a Grammy for best big band arrangement. Holman took this great standard, put it in 3-4, and wrote scintillating counter lines that weave their way through the whole arrangement. Short, sweet and swingin'! Willie Maiden's arrangement of I'll Be Seeing You packs a whopper in a tiny box, making this chart perfect as an encoure closer for any set. As recorded by Maynard Ferguson and his orchestra on the album Dancing Sessions, Willie's arrangement makes great use of the trombone section as they carry the melody upfront before passing it around to the rest of the band. There is some space for a short trumpet solo before the band comes roaring in at the end to take it out with a punch! Bill Holman's music never disappoints, and 'Introduction to an Ending' is no exception! Originally written for and recorded on the Charlie Barnet Big Band 1967 album, this straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, and drums. Filled with energy and excitement, the shout chorus comes roaring in to take the tune out with a bang. This is a great addition to any program! 5-4-4-3.

Billy Byers, known for his wildly successful arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra, provided them with some of their best music ever performed and recorded. Originally recorded on the album Frankly Basie, 'South of the Border' has it all - Basie piano solos (written out), roaring ensemble passages, a swinging saxophone soli, and some compelling key changes. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet, and piano. If you want your band and audiences to experience to joy of Basie, then this chart is a must! 5-4-4-4.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).
