Many of th ese viola works were written for the English violist Lionel Tertis, whose mission was to promote the viola through the commissioning of viola works from a variety of composers. Bowen's Romance in D flat was originally composd for violin and piano and was later transcribed for Tertis. This edition, arranged for clarinet by Andrew DeBoer, shows the lyrical and expressive qualities of the clarinet.
