LE FATSO MONTE JUSQU A ONZE ELEVEN (onze) est un nouveau compresseur pour le FATSO, remplaçant l'ancien taux GP, et il émule le célèbre UREI 1176LN en 20:1, avec l'attaque la plus lente et le relâchement le plus rapide. Ce réglage du 1176 a été utilisé dans d'innombrables enregistrements à succès depuis des décennies. Avec l'attaque plus lente du « 1176 », les transitoires maintiennent la présence de la dynamique, tandis que le taux élevé peut radicalement limiter la dynamique de toute source, pour lui donner de la présence et la place qui lui convient dans votre mixage. On peut aussi bien tout écraser que n appliquer que quelques dB de compression. Vous constaterez qu'il est remarquable sur le chant, la basse, les guitares acoustiques, les micros d'ambiance de batterie, les pianos, etc. Le taux ELEVEN a nécessité plusieurs mois d'expérimentation, et exigé une modification assez radicale de l'attaque pour s'en approcher. C'était un de ces projets dont Dave Derr, son concepteur, pensait qu'il ne prendrait que quelques jours, mais après la phase de recherche initiale et les tests d'écoute, les subtilités qui sont apparues ont nécessité de tout recommencer à plusieurs reprises. « J'ai été pris dans un de ces cercles vicieux de conception où vous obtenez quelque chose de bien, puis vous modifiez un autre paramètre ou un composant, et vous vous apercevez que cela a changé la première chose que vous teniez pour acquise. En réalité, cela a été une longue et frustrante suite de changements, qui ont lentement mené au résultat souhaité. Toute sorte de calcul mathématique ou de proportionnalité semblait inutile. En outre, pendant les tests des 1176, j'ai découvert des points dont je suis à peu près sûr qu'ils n'étaient pas prévus par les concepteurs d'origine, et des choses dont ils ignoraient probablement l existence. Mais en utilisant des oscilloscopes et analyseurs numériques modernes, des stations de travail numériques et nos bonnes vieilles oreilles, nous avons pu voir des artefacts qui ont échappé aux concepteurs d'origine. » « Dire qu'ils auraient peut-être même essayé de résoudre les petites imperfections qui ont donné au 1176 son caractère unique s'ils avaient eu les outils pour les voir. Heureusement qu'ils ne les avaient pas , n'est-ce pas Quoi qu'il en soit, le cercle vicieux de la conception a été frustrant, mais comme tout ce qui vous amène hors des entiers battus, avec un peu de chance, cela donne un peu plus de sagesse, et un excellent produit. J'espère que nos clients trouveront le nouveau taux ELEVEN amusant à utiliser, et découvriront qu'il peut ajouter un peu plus de magie à leur musique. » REMARQUE : tous les anciens « FATSO Jr » peuvent être modifiés pour remplacer le taux GP par le nouveau taux ELEVEN. De plus, tous les FATSO expédiés par Empirical Labs depuis juin 2013 ont le taux ELEVEN déjà installé dans le circuit, sous le taux GP, donc si vous avez acheté un FATSO récemment, vous avez probablement déjà le circuit équivalent à l'EL7-X. Nouvelle logique et et nouveau fonctionnement de l'interface Le FATSO Jr pouvait devenir assez chaud. La chaleur étant l'ennemi de la fiabilité, nous avons décidé de faire notre possible pour refroidir l'unité dans cette nouvelle conception. En remplaçant le circuit logique discret par un microprocesseur et en éliminant le circuit d'affichage qui chauffait et manquait de fiabilité, la consommation électrique a été réduite de plus de 20 %, permettant à l'alimentation et aux circuits analogiques de bénéficier d'un fonctionnement à plus basse température. Le fonctionnement de l'interface du nouveau FATSO a par ailleurs été grandement amélioré. Maintenir n'importe quelle touche pendant une seconde fait varier sa valeur en sens inverse, de sorte que l'utilisateur n'a plus à passer en revue toutes les valeurs pour revenir en arrière. En outre, le couplage stéréo est amélioré et offre une deuxième méthode de couplage en appuyant sur les deux touches COMP à la fois. Cela associe les compresseurs et le circuit logique de Bypass, et permet donc aux touches de l'un ou l'autre des canaux de contrôler les paramètres. C'est beaucoup plus sûr. Il existe dorénavant une LED distincte pour le compresseur TRACK (Tracking), afin que deux LED n'aient pas à être employées, ni interprétées par l'utilisateur. SPANK est maintenant une LED bleue se démarquant des autres compresseurs sur le côté, pour indiquer qu'elle est différente et peut être utilisée en conjonction avec les autres taux. Les clients trouveront la sélection de compresseur plus évidente et plus SYMPA. Les quatre types de traitement du FATSO Génération d'harmoniques et écrêtage doux (génération de distorsion) - ce circuit de classe A arrondit délicatement les crêtes comme des lampes ou une bande magnétique saturées. Saturation des hautes fréquences (chaleur) - filtre passe-bas dynamique unique en son genre qui adoucit les hautes fréquences lorsqu'elles « s'accumulent » dans une source. Émulation de transformateur et de tête magnétique de lecture - simulation de l'effet des transformateurs d'entrée et de sortie d'appareils plus anciens, qui ajoutent les harmoniques de basse fréquence qui les caractérisent, tout comme une bande analogique. Courbe de compression (« knee ») classique - le dispositif de nivellement automatique type que l'on trouve sur quasiment toute piste d'instrument ou de chant, ainsi que sur le bus général, façon compression Empirical Labs régulier et doux, mais quelle présence ! Sans doute le plus cool et le plus unique des appareils de l'arsenal Empirical Labs, le FATSO (Full Analog Tape Simulator and Optimizer) est un appareil analogique à contrôle numérique qui donne aux musiciens et ingénieurs du son un accès facile à de nombreuses caractéristiques recherchées des anciens appareils électroniques à lampes et de classe A, ainsi que des supports à bande magnétique. Ce processeur audio à deux canaux intègre musicalement les fréquences et les transitoires, augmentant le volume apparent tout en conservant un étroit contrôle sur le niveau des crêtes. Avec le FATSO, les studios d'enregistrement et les plates-formes de production audio peuvent améliorer et adoucir le son des enregistreurs numériques et des stations de travail audionumériques. Les ingénieurs de mixage n'auront pas à utiliser d'encombrants et coûteux magnétophones analogiques à bande pour obtenir la chaleur et la douceur des aigus sur lesquelles ils comptent depuis plusieurs décennies. Les possesseurs de stations de travail audionumériques et d'enregistreurs numériques peuvent enfin cesser de se plaindre de la froideur et du côté « cassant » de leurs mixages et de leurs instruments. Même les audiophiles peuvent bénéficier du FATSO en apportant à leur lecteurs CD et autres moyens de reproduction numériques la chaleur et l'ambiance des vinyles et des bandes. Comme la plupart des produits Empirical Labs, cette unité est incroyablement facile et amusante à utiliser. De grands boutons de type Distressor contrôlent les niveaux d'entrée et de sortie. Quatre modes de compression méticuleusement peaufinés dont le très apprécié réglage « Buss » et le légendaire « Spank », une courbe d'entrée en action subtile suivie d'une limitation ressemblant au compresseur de talkback SSL peuvent être sélectionnés (et combinés !) par simple pression d'une touche. Sept réglages différents de « chaleur » de saturation des hautes fréquences sont accessibles tout aussi facilement. Le FATSO dispose également de circuits de transformateur commutables, qui peuvent ajouter les artefacts musicaux générés par des appareils classiques de NEVE, API, etc comme l'écrêtage léger et la distorsion intermodulaire, l'écrêtage des transitoires... et quelques autres non-linéarités très musicales. Fidèle à son nom, le FATSO est d'une construction plutôt solide vous serez impressionné par sa fabrication dès vous le sortirez de son carton. Le FATSO est « l'arme secrète » des ingénieurs de studio et de sonorisation depuis de nombreuses années, leur permettant d'ajouter à leur son l'insaisissable magie des appareils vintage. En plus du circuitTrue Tape– excellent pour faire ressortir les harmoniques de rang 3 – le 542 incorpore un circuit Soft-Clip qui adoucit les sources les plus agressives et améliore les harmoniques de rang 2, un circuit variable et versatile Silk/Texture permettant d'obtenir le rendu sonore de 3 transformateurs en 1 et un réglage Wet/Dry pour ajouter juste ce qu'il faut de saturation.Le circuit d'émulationTrue Tapedu Portico 542 vous offre la compression et le son rond qu'il est d'habitude possible d'obtenir uniquement en utilisant des bandes et peut contrebalancer l'agressivité que crée souvent un enregistrement numérique. Contrairement aux émulations numériques, le circuitTrue Tapefonctionne en envoyant le signal vers une petite tête d'enregistrement magnétique couplée à un amplificateur dont l'égalisation est adaptée. La tension de la tête d'enregistrement augmentant, la saturation apparaît et un circuit Soft Clip s'active lorsque le niveau est élevé pour adoucir les pics de transitoires. Le son du circuit à bande peut par la suite être modifié grâce aux modes 15/30 IPS et au réglage de mixage pré/post bande. En plus du circuit à bande, le 542 intègre également le circuit variable Silk/Texture qui équipe les modules de la série Portico II, permettant au technicien de régler avec précision le son et le taux d'harmoniques du transformateur de sortie.Obtenir le meilleur du 542Alors que par le passé, la non-linéarité des bandes était plus perçue comme une malédiction que comme unefonction, l'avènement des systèmes numériques au fonctionnement complètement linéaire a permis à beaucoup d'apprécier les défauts du traitement audio non linéaire. Contrairement aux systèmes linéaires, les appareils non-linéaires forcent l'utilisateur à expérimenter différents réglages de gain pour que le circuit fonctionne de manière optimale. Même si cela demande un petit effort de la part de l'ingénieur du son, s'il est utilisé correctement, le circuit peut ajouter un aspect dynamique à l'enregistrement pouvant donner du punch à une chanson.La non-linéarité du circuitTrue Tapeet du réglage de saturation du 542 nécessite de surveiller à la fois les niveaux d'entrée et du réglage Drive. Le réglage des niveaux de Drive et de saturation du circuit à bande du 542 peut avoir un impact significatif sur le son. Si vous augmentez la saturation, la compensation des basses fréquences diminue, et à partir du niveau 5 de Drive, le circuit Soft-Clipper est activé. Trouver le meilleur équilibre entre la réponse des basses fréquences, la distorsion harmonique totale et le taux de Soft Clipping souhaité requiert de jouer avec une combinaison des réglages de saturation, de gain et de mixage, et peut également nécessiter un traitement dynamique et d'ajouter un étage de gain dédié avant le 542.En règle générale, nous vous conseillons de démarrer avec un signal d'entrée de 2-10dBu et d'appliquer saturation, 15/30 IPS, Silk et de mixer à votre goût. Cependant, il incombe toujours à l'ingénieur du son de trouver le bon équilibre entre le niveau du signal pré-bande et le niveau de saturation afin d'obtenir le meilleur résultat pour chaque source.Pour vous faire une meilleure idée de l'effet obtenu à différents niveaux de saturation et de la tête de lecture, consultez les graphiques de réponse en fréquence et de DHT en fonction de la réponse en fréquence dans la section Caractéristiques Techniques à la fin de ce mode d'emploi.De plus, comme pour une vraie machine à bande, les boucles de flux du circuit True Tape peuvent capter les signaux des champs magnétiques forts situés à proximité (le plus souvent, ils sont produits par les alimentations électriques, les amplis de puissance et les écrans d'ordinateur). Bien que nous ayons blindé tout l'appareil en plus du circuit à bande pour limiter l'inductance parasite, si vous avez des problèmes de bourdonnement lorsque vous activez le circuit à bande, essayez d'éloigner le 542 de tout générateur de champ magnétique jusqu'à ce que le bourdonnement cesse.Ajouter de la textureLes modes Silk sont tous deux modifiables et ajustables grâce au réglageTexture. En manipulant le réglage de Texture, l'effet de la fonction Silk peut varier de quasiment inaudible à plus ou moins quatre fois plus présent que le Silk de la série Portico originale. En activant les fonctions Silk et Texture, les caractéristiques de la distorsion et le contenu harmonique de l'appareil peuvent rappeler de nombreux circuits classe-A classiques de Rupert. Ces réglages ouvrent les portes d'un nouveau monde de sonorités au 542 qui se doit d'être exploré de manière créative avec le circuit True Tape pour obtenir le meilleur effet.Conçu pour la série 500 par M. Rupert NeveRupert Neve :Même si créer des module fonctionnels pour la série 500 est relativement simple, concevoir ces modules de manière à égaler leurs équivalents des autres séries avec les contraintes de courant, tension et d'espace est un véritable défi. En créant les modules de la série Portico 500, nous avons expérimenté différents transformateurs et circuits pour obtenir la présence et la douceur propres aux modules des séries Portico. Le résultat de ces efforts est qu'en dehors de la réserve de puissance légèrement réduite, les modules de la série 500 sont quasiment identiques aux modules des séries Portico standards et sont parfaitement adaptés pour les studios les plus exigeants.Le Portico 542 consiste en un amplificateur de ligne avec des entrées et sorties symétrisées par transformateur. La qualité sonore de ces amplificateurs est telle qu'avec une isolation galvanique, un circuit unilatéral à la topologie simple et l'absence de problèmes liés à la masse, ils sont capables d'améliorer la qualité sonore de nombreuses sources, particulièrement celles d'origine numérique. La signature sonore est d'une grande pureté et la qualité équivalente à celle des appareils conçus par Rupert Neve il y a 35-40 ans.TAPE InEnvoie le signal vers le circuitTrue Tapelui-même soumis aux réglages Saturation, Blend et 15/30 IPS.TRIMPermet de régler le niveau du signal d'entrée (+/– 12 dB) avant le circuit à bande.SATURATIONContrôle le niveau du signal envoyé à la tête magnétique. Lorsque le niveau de la saturation augmente, le niveau de la tête d'enregistrement s'élève et le gain de lecture est réduit de manière à ce que le niveau général reste plus ou moins constant. Dans un véritable enregistreur à bande, vous devriez régler le gain d'enregistrement et de lecture séparément. Dans le 542, les réglages de gain d'enregistrement et de lecture sont couplés afin que le niveau général ne varie que lorsque le niveau de la saturation de bande est modifié. Lorsque vous approchez du réglage de saturation maximum, le niveau du signal de sortie diminue en raison du niveau extrême de saturation et est soumis à un écrêtage doux.De plus, pour compenser la perte des basses fréquences lorsque le niveau de la tête d'enregistrement est bas, le réglage de saturation contrôle également un circuit de compensation des basses fréquences qui amplifie ces fréquences à bas niveau de saturation puis s'amenuise lorsque le niveau augmente. Cette fonction peut être utile sur de nombreuses sources comme la basse ou la grosse caisse pour trouver le bon équilibre entre des graves clairs et présents (saturation faible) ou des graves plus denses et saturés (saturation élevée).15/30 IPSPermet de sélectionner les caractéristiques de préaccentuation/déaccentuation et d'enregistrement/lecture de la bande. Le mode 15 IPS possède unebossesignificative dans les basses fréquences centrées autour de 60 Hz et atténue également les hautes fréquences. Le mode 30 IPS offre généralement une réponse plus uniforme dans les aigus avec unebosseautours de 120 Hz. Voir les graphiques de fréquences pages 10 et 11.BLENDPermet de régler le mixage des signaux pré et post bande. L'ingénieur du son peut ainsi appliquer l'effet de bande de manière subtile afin d'avoir un meilleur contrôle de la saturation, de la sonorité et du Soft Clipping sur le signal traité. Lorsque le signal est très saturé, diminuer le réglage Blend peut être un excellent moyen de colorer le son avec la bande sans perdre en précision ni en transparence. REMARQUE : Le réglage Blend n'affecte pas les réglages Silk et Texture.SOFT CLIPCette fonction est activée dans le circuitTrue Tapelorsque l'afficheur Drive atteint 5 (la première Led jaune) et devient plus présent lorsque le niveau augmente.
