Duet playing has been a favorite parlor pastime since the beginnings of music history. Because of the "lean" instrumentation, it is difficult to compose duets that are both interesting for the player and engaging for te listener. Most often, perhaps, composers have written duets primarily for the pleasure of the players. Written by renowned masters, the duets chosen for this volume represent an advanced artistic level of two-part composition. As such, they provide the clarinetist an artistic challenge, certainly more than a simple sight reading exercise. Technically these duets challenge both players equally with solo oppurtunities shifting between the two parts. The practice and study of these duets will help the student develop musically. Conversely, as the student attains musical maturity, he/she will appreciate these duets more and more.
