No. 2 In G Major Op. 36.

Mozart wrote the five Divertimenti for Wind Sextet between the years 1775 and 1777 when he was living in Salzburg. The Italian title is reminiscent of simple 'light? music, but the pieces' melodic ingenuity and colourful writing for winds show it to be chamber music of the highest quality. Our edition is based on the autograph and brings together all five authentic sextets in one practical edition. An ensemble with the standard instrumentation (two oboes, two horns and two bassoons) will discover a true musical treasure. The two horn parts are provided both in the original transpositions (F/Bb/Eb) and also for horn in F. / 2 Hautbois, 2 Cors Et 2 Bassons

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart composed his two “Lodron Serenades” for open-air performances on the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron in June 1776 and 1777. Their bright “al fresco” character is immediately recognisable. Alfred Einstein considered these two divertimentos to be “among the purest, gayest, most satisfying, and most perfect that ever assumed musical form”.
For both works Mozart chose an ensemble of two horns, two violins, viola and bass instruments. However, the second Lodron Serenade, the Divertimento in B-flat major K. 287, stands out from this sextet format by assigning a remarkably virtuosic solo role to the first violin, from the richly diverse opening movement to the finale with its almost ironic recitative and an exhilarating passage on the folk song “D’Bäurin hat d’Katz verlorn”. Mozart himself played first violin in the 1777 performance. Later he wrote, “They all opened their eyes! I played as though I were the finest fiddler in all Europe”./ Répertoire / 2 Cors, 2 Violons, Alto et Contrebasse

Rameau's 'Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour? was long considered second-rate b...(+)
Rameau's 'Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour? was long considered second-rate because its première was associated with a political event. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as 'Zaïs?, 'Zoroastre? and 'Les Boréades?. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from 'Aruéris?, a scoring found nowhere else in his oeuvre. For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of 'Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour? presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Académie Royale de Musique in 1748.- Milestone of French Baroque opera in performance practice orientated vocal score- With a brief foreword (Fr/Eng) containing salient information on the genesis of the work, the synopsis and the edition / Orchestre

Franck's two string
sextets, op. 41 in E-flat
major, published in
1882/84, and op. 50, in D
major, completed in
December 1884 but
published posthumously in
1894, fall mysteriously
outside of their era.
They are a significant
addition to the rather
concise repertoire for
string sextet, joining
the two works in this
genre by Johannes Brahms.
Eduard Franck was one of
the very few private
students of Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy,
who was himself a close
friend of the Franck
family, so that Eduard
was firmly rooted in the
Mendelssohn tradition.
But what is particularly
exciting in the sextets,
is how he consistently
further developed
Mendelssohn's immanent
genre-defining
tendencies, thus founding
a conservative
alternative to the
Schumann-Brahms
course. $26.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks | | |

me 31 contains, among
other works, the Piano
Quartet, which was
enthusiastically received
by the critics in
Rheinberger's time: The
themes are noble, with
significant content, the
motivic development is
rich and interesting,
above all free from
anything resembling a
mould ... and such a
healthy musical wind
blows through the entire
work that I believe I am
not mistaken if I forsee
for this work a great
success. This is how a
contemporary critic
reviewed the work.
Indeed, op. 38 proceeded
to become the most
successful of
Rheinberger's chamber
music works during his
lifetime. The Sextet op.

arrangement of his Piano
Trio No. 4 op. 191, for
flute, oboe, clarinet,
bassoon, horn and piano.

Franck finished the fair
copy of his second string
sextet score in December
1884. The piece can thus
be described as a typical
late work, also evident
from its wistful
retrospective mood. The
sextet's D-major first
movement has a concise
main theme moving to an
expressive secondary
theme whereas its final
movement is a polyphonic
masterpiece: This full,
yet transparent movement
integrates all the
characteristics of the
preceding movements in a
rhythmically elastic,
richly melodic broader

of chamber music playing
went on in Fargo, North
Dakota during my teenage
years. The participants
included both high school
friend - my brother, who
plays viola, was an is an
inveterate chamber music
player - and members of
parents' generation. The
latter included not only
professional musicians
(the conductor of the
Fargo-Moorhead Community

teacher, his wife, who

others) but also people
from various other walks
of life. Although I don't

I was almost always in
attendance, with score in

the young cellists we
played with went to the

so I got to play the
cello parts on the

string quartets that were
played, but one of the
larger pieces I remember
being done more than once
was the Brahms Sextet in
G Major, and I think that
the idea for utilizing
that combination had been
lurking in the back of my
mind since then. In the
middle 1980's, ideas for
a string sextet began
appearing in my
sketchbooks; one movement
(the fourth) was actually
completed in one of the
sketchbooks. But without
a deadline, it's hard for
me to finish a major
work, since there are
always other pieces (with
deadlines) waiting to be
completed. So when the
Composers Showcase at
Lincoln Center asked me
to put together a
retrospective of my work,
I knew I wanted to have a
premiere on the program,
and May 7, 1990 became
the deadline that I got
the piece done. The work
is in six movements, with
a symmetrical key
pattern; the movements
range from the very
dramatic to the very
easy-going. I had
contacted the Lark
Quartet, who had
commissioned my String
Quartet No.2, about
forming the core of the
sextet. Unfortunately,
one of the Larks had a
scheduling conflict, but
the other three rounded
up three more players,
and the six of them gave
the piece a rousing
performance, in spite of
the limited rehearsal
time. The players were

professional musicians
(the conductor of the
Fargo-Moorhead Community
Orchestra, who also
played cello and was my
first composition
teacher, his wife, who
was the
orchestra’s
concert mistress, and
others) but also people
from various other walks
of life. Although I
don’t play a
string instrument, I was
almost always in
attendance, with score in
hand. (One summer, all
the young cellists we
played with went to the
Interlochen Music Camp,
so I got to play the
cello parts on the
bassoon.)Mostly it was
string quartets that were
played, but one of the
larger pieces I remember
being done more than once
was the Brahms Sextet in
G Major, and I think that
the idea for utilizing
that combination had been
lurking in the back of my
mind since then. In the
middle 1980’s,
ideas for a string sextet
began appearing in my
sketchbooks; one movement
(the fourth) was actually
completed in one of the
sketchbooks. But without
a deadline, it’s
hard for me to finish a
major work, since there
are always other pieces
(with deadlines) waiting
to be completed. So when
the Composers Showcase at
Lincoln Center asked me
to put together a
retrospective of my work,
I knew I wanted to have a
premiere on the program,
and May 7, 1990 became
the deadline that I got
the piece done.The work
is in six movements, with
a symmetrical key
pattern; the movements
range from the very
dramatic to the very
easy-going.I had
contacted the Lark
Quartet, who had
commissioned my String
Quartet No.2, about
forming the core of the
sextet. Unfortunately,
one of the Larks had a
scheduling conflict, but
the other three rounded
up three more players,
and the six of them gave
the piece a rousing
performance, in spite of
the limited rehearsal
time. The players were
Eva Gruesser, Genovia
Cummins, Anna Kruger,
Mary Hamman, Astrid
Schween and Julia

Sextet starts with cries
of agony – the
atmosphere is filled with
chaos and turmoil. It is
as if the listener had
been thrown onto the
surface of a hostile
planet, devoid of any
comprehensible life. In
the second movement,
vivid life forms begin to
appear, at first
frightening, but soon
starting to take gentler
forms, which eventually
start to take the music
closer to the key of G
major. The last movement
starts with a recitative,
a gesture often found in
late Beethoven. There is
a feeling that we are
approaching something
important – mysterious
gates slowly open,
revealing a Cavatina,
followed by a set of
variations. The
progression of these
variations eventually
leads also to dissonant
memories from the
beginning of the work,
but those dissonances are
finally resolved in the
last variation, which
ultimately finds its
peace and begins its
ascension toward the
skies and to the radiant
brightness of G major.
