"Shchedryk", meaning 'bountiful' is the original name of this New Year carol. The Ukrainian text tells of a swallow flying into a house to sing of the bounty and wealth that will come the following Spring. The hypnotic 4-note ostinato is shared between the 6 equal voices, and in the second verse the bell figures build to a jubilant wash of sound.
