German Lieder from the early Romantic period come to mind in this classical setting of a favorite hymn. As you will hear in the recording, the violin is not so much an adornment as a musical force whose function equals the choir. In addition, Craig Courtney's choice of harmony and texture lend an air of formality to the total effect. The recurring refrain is expressed in a cappella divisi voicing, although cue-sized notes provide the option for pure SATB for smaller choirs. The violin or flute part is included with the octavo.
