The German composer Ewald Strasser (1867-1933) studied in Cologne and afterwards taught there and subsequently at the Stuttgart Conservatorium. The spirit of Brahms is apparent in much of his music. Although he wished to be known as a symphonic composer, (there are two symphonies and a violin concerto), the clarity of form and the originality of melodic ideas in his chamber music should not be overlooked. He wrote fine quintets for piano and string quartet and for clarinet and string quartet in addition to five very successful string quartets.
