Burns submitted the his poem to the Scots Musical Museum whereupon he proclaimed: "The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man." The poem is generally sung to a Scots folk melody, though the original tune was likely a sprightly dance played at a much quicker pace. The song is well known in the English-speaking world, and is traditionally used to celebrate the start of the New Year on the stroke of midnight. This free sheet music is for flute and guitar duet.
