This is a challenging chamber concerto for trombone and
saxophone quartet that was written for my friend,
trombonist Kathryn Kell, when we were studying at
Virginia Commonwealth University. Ms. Kell premiered
the piece in 2009 with the Sax ASAP saxophone
quartet.
A driving, menacing start opens up into a delicate and
wandering slower section, followed by a return to the
opening landscape with technical gymnastics for the
trombone soloist. Finally, all is well with the return

trombone soloist. Finally, all is well with the return
to the theme from the more delicate passages, but this
time finding focus and driving powerfully toward the
closing notes.
