Andreas De Silva (1475 - ) Espagne (b c 1475-80). ?Spanish singerandcomposer. Having trained probably in France and northern Italy, he was employed by Pope Leo X in Rome and, from 1522, by the Duke of Mantua. His output includes six masses, at least 31 motets and a chanson. An original composer who adapted many local stylistic influences, he was held in high regard both during his life and later. His style is characterized by simple, expressive melodies tending towards declamation, a dramatic sense of harmony and clearly defined structures. Some of the more adventurous pieces explore the new developments of such composers as Willaert and Gombert. He is not to be confused with Andreas Silvanus.
