As recounted by our dad, Charles Colin, he was first introduced to Miles in the mid '50's by Charlie Parker. Pop had already published Charlie Parker's, 'Yardbird Originals' under our other publishing company, 'New Sounds in Modern Music'. Miles had been away for a period and, now that he was back on the scene, Parker thought it would be worthwhile for Miles to meet his new publisher, with the hope of working out a similar arrangement. Parker brought Miles to the office, then on 48th Street to meet Pop. Pop was very happy to give it a go, whereupon he gave Miles a trumpet, a mouthpiece and tape recorder and asked him to lay down solos over some standard tunes. The original transcriptions which, I believe were done by Hank Edmonds, were given the 'cool' knick-names, Miles Away, Miles Cools Off, etc. rather than the names of actual standards. So, here we are decades later, and have decided to ask renowned arranger, David Berger, to identify the tunes and clarify some of the chord changes - for posterity!

This theoretical book is meant to improve contemporary jazz styles techniques for all musician players of modern jazz. We will divide this book into scale exercises, arpeggio exercises, jazz line phrases as well as contemporary chord progressions. Exercises consist of diatonic and chromatic exercises; and, line phrases, consist of jazz solos by great musicians such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Freddy Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Farrel, Dave Liebman, Bob Berg, Michael and Randy Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Tom Harrel, Chris Potter, Brad Mehldau, Joey Calderazzo, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Walt Weiskopf, Rich Perry, Seamus Blake, Alex Sipiagin and many other well known musicians these days. The majority of these exercises should be transposed to all twelve (12) tones, so we can achieve perfect coordination. Major chords, Minor chords and Dominant chords will be extended to their highest level, in scales, arpeggios and chromatic form. There will not be key signature centres, so we will work all exercises in accidental way. These exercises were made as an extension of my first book 'Improvise Now'. There are as well many improvisational lines transcribed from some of the previously mentioned musicians.

This theoretical book is meant to improve contemporary jazz styles and techniques for all players of modern jazz. This study investigates jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock's seven albums recorded as a bandleader for Blue Note Records between 1962 and 1969. Recorded during Hancock's tenures with Donal Byrd and Miles Davis, his early works are highly mature musical conceptions, with all the major elements of Hancock's personal musical style already present. A mixed-methods approach combining sever forms of qualitative data analysis is used to identify the formal construction, the musical meanings, and the cultural significance of this body of music. The study surveys the thirty-six compositions that comprise these seven albums, and selects for in-depth analysis seven pieces that are proportionally representative of the formal characteristics of this larger repertoire: The Maze, The Pleasure Is Mine, Jack Rabbit, One Finger Snap, Little One, Toys, and I Have A Dream. Hancock's improvisations on these repretative compositions are transcribed, and each improvisation and composition is analyzed for its historical context and significance of each recording is examined through interviews with persons involved in the original recording process, as well as other jazz musicians and scholars with deep knowledge of Hancock's life, music and oeuvre. Aesthetic analyses, informed by the theories of of Kivy and Elliot, investigate the expressive or representational qualities of each composition, and examine how formal musical elements contribute to these expressive or representational qualities. Formal analyses examine elements of Hancock's compositional and improvisational style. The study concludes the Hancock's compositions and improvisations of the period exhibit a number of consistent style elements, such as sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic superimposition, that were very important influences on jazz pianists of the following generation.
