Orig inally composed for the Allegro Wind Ensemble this became a favourite piece for the players. It is a very tongue in cheek piece. I decided to arrange it for the unique sound of a bassoon quartet as I felt that sound world they create really suited it. A series of ostinati create excitement at the start of the piece. In the second section, chromatic lines create tension and drama before the opening section returns. When I had originally composed it I was stuck for a name, inspiration came from a pupil I was teaching at the time. Posy was struggling with a section of music, hence Posy's Predicament.

The piece starts and ends with a bright theme that requires attention to the accidentals and the key changes. The central section gives the ensemble a chance to play in a more relaxed way before the main theme returns. Make sure you give it some at the end with 'Av It!

It has the basic form of a 'road march' rather than a concert march. Strong melodic lines open the piece, then a solid bass subject is added. The trio section gives a chance for the melody to take on a more sustained character. A short fanfard bridge takes you to the trio melody once again, but in a more majestic tone.

The three sections of this piece need sensitive playing from the player, as each section highlights a different aspect of the oboe's character. The Prelude is serious and brooding in a minor key. The interlude is lighter, with beautiful flowing melody, often in canon with the right hand of the piano part. The Dance is lighthearted and entertaining, with almost the character of a folk dance. The piece was composed with an intermediate oboist in mind. The oboe part is very lyrical throughout the piece, and will require good breath control to ensure that the piece 'sings'.
