Edited by
Edward Tambling Thomas
Tomkins wrote no fewer
than seven services:
three full and four verse
settings. The first two
full services, as
numbered in the
posthumous publication of
‘Musica Deo
Sacra’ (1668), are
straightforward settings
in the central
Elizabethan style. The
First Service is in the
major mode, and the
Second Service in the
minor: the Third Service
is a radical departure in
style from these settings
and is presented as a
‘Great
Service’ in homage
to Tomkins’
‘ancient and much
reverenced master,
William Byrd’. The
Fourth and Fifth are
verse services, and a
further two are present
only in manuscript
sources: the Sixth
Service received its
first modern publication
in this series (CP17),
edited and reconstructed
by Peter James. The
Seventh to date is
unpublished, and survives
only in the form of an
organ part, the vocal
parts having been lost to
history. This numbering
system of one to seven is
misleading, however, as
it confuses the
chronology of the
compositions: some
attempt to clarify this
ordering is given in a
table at the end of this
edition in order to
address this matter.
Tomkins’
relatively late death
places him well into the
seventeenth century, at a
time when musical
fashions were changing
and the Civil War was
altering the course of
British History. However,
it is correct to describe
him as ‘the last
Elizabethan’, as
his style remained
conservative, as did the
genres with which he
worked and cultivated.
‘Musica Deo
Sacra’ is supposed
to have been supervised
by his son Nathaniel, and
collates much of
Tomkins’ music not
found in other sources.
As such, it is a valuable
resource for the material
it contains, and is also
a landmark in music
publishing, in that it
presents the first known
printed organ book set in
moveable type on two
staves, an unrewarding
process which seems to
have caused considerable
trouble for its printer,
William Godbid. Even John
Barnard in preparing his
‘First of Selected
Church Musick’
(1641) did not go to the
trouble of printing an
organ part to supplement
his vocal partbooks,
instead providing his
customers with a blank
manuscript book into
which the already
ubiquitous organ parts
could be copied by hand.
As a result,
Tomkins’ source as
a whole contains a number
of errors, but all of
which can be corrected
without distortion to the
musical text, and the
composer’s
intention can be realised
without too much
difficulty. Â In
addition to the note on
the ordering of the
various services by
Tomkins, I have
endeavoured to give some
brief information
concerning the pitch of
church music of this
period with regards to
the organ part, a subject
much misunderstood and
obfuscated by variously
contradictory
information. Â It is
hoped that this new
edition of
Tomkins’ First
Evening Service will fill
a need for short,
attractive settings of
the canticles for
Evensong, furthering an
appreciation of the music
of the last great
composer of the
Renaissance era in
Britain. $5.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

inches. Bicinia -
unaccompanied duos - have
been known to us from the
fifteenth century
onwards. So quite early
on it was customary tu
practise this type of
musical exercise, which
later, especially during
the Romantic period,
achieved great popularity
as the duo or duett.
Equal numbers of this
sort of instrumental duo
were composed for nearly
all wind and string
instruments. On the other
hand, only a small amount
of compositions for two
trumpets have come down
to us. In order to play
any music which
progresses beyond pure
fanfare on a natural
(valueless) trumpet, it
is necessary to make use
of the clarion register
(the top third of the
natural harmonic). And if
such a melody is to be
accompanied by a second
part, only the few
natural notes lying below
it are left, or else this
high register itself,
which calls for great
virtuosity on the part of
the trumpeter. As well as
this, we must remember
the fact that
trumpet-playing was only
allowed for the
trumpeters of a royal
court, army, staff, or
for the field-trumpeter
of a prince, plus a few
council, city, and church
musicians, who were bound
by strict guild and
corporation rules. Thus
in spite of the
preference for its
festive sound, the spread
and handing down of
trumpet music was almost
reduced to nothing under
these circumstances. As
well as this, pride of
place and profession
rivalry and envy amongst
musicians contributed in
large part. In England
the situation was
somewhat freer. Here
pretty little trumpet
duos originated,
including, amongst
others, those written by
Handel for his
master-trumpeter Valentin
Snow and the Royal
Sergeant-trumpeters of
the Shore family. An
especially happy
exception was the diocese
of Olmiitz. Here there
was a capable group of
musicians of the chapel
royal with the
brilliantly talented
group of trumpeters and
the field-trumpeter Pavel
Vajvanovsky, who also
composed himself. These
trumpeters in the service
of his prince-bishop
played many sacred and
secular pieces, all for
several instruments. It
was for them also that
Heinrich Ignaz Franz
Biber wrote the 12 double
trumpet sonatas we
present here. On the
other hand, the
representatives of the
authorities in Germany
ensured strict
observation of all edicts
and regulations. Even the
celebrated Bach-trumpeter
and towm-piper Gottfried
Reiche was never allowed
to be portrayed with a
proper trumpet due to the
priveleges of court and
field trumpeters. In
order to represent him as
one of the greatest
masters of his time and
art, however, the painter
placed an instrument
similar to a
corno-di-caccia in his
hand, together with a
sheet with a small piece
for virtuoso clarion.
When we try in spite of
these difficulties and
adverse circumstances to
gather a collection of
musically valuable and
characteristic examples
of popular pieces for two
trumpets from the
seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries, it
is in the first, place in
order to acquaint modern
trumpeters with something
of the wealth of music,
which can also be well
played on a modern
trumpet with valves. The
originally used trumpets
correspond to modern ones
in the keys of C and D,
but this does not mean
that many of the pieces
cannot be transposed to a
more comfortable
register. On top of this,
we have tried to give a
picture of the baroque
court and field
trumpeter, as well as of
the mysterious clarion
trumpeter, with the help
of musically popular
material. The origin of
most of the pieces used
is no longer clearly
discernable. In most
cases we possess second-
or third-hand copies
which have been handed
down, and show signs of
frequent use. A few cases
where modernization of
the second part obviously
did not take place until
the invention of stops,
have been re-shaped into
their supposed original
form. A series of further
dynamic details were
left, and marked as
optional suggestions in
brackets. Kurt

House Also available for
sale: Two churches, one
Presbyterian, one
Methodist, located in two
adjacent states, wanted
to commission a major
work for chorus and
orchestra to use in a
memorial service held
annually near the feast
of All Saints, but felt
that, considering the
costs involved in hiring
an orchestra for the
performance, they
couldn’t also
afford the commissioning
fee which an extended
work would necessitate.
Composer Daniel E.
Gawthrop put the two
directors in touch with
each other, and a joint
commission was conceived.
Originally, the plan
called for two completely
separate premières,
one at each church, but
as the directors
consulted on musical
matters they decided that
it would add an element
of ecumenism and outreach
to the project if they
joined the two choirs
together for both
performances.
Accordingly, on the first
of the two Sundays the
South Carolina
Presbyterians joined the
North Carolina Methodists
in their Sunday morning
services to sing the
première of Behold
This Mystery. On the
following Sunday the
travel was reversed for
the second première.
The involved choirs,
congregations, clergy and
directors all declared
the project a triumph.
Further performances
followed, and the piece
has now earned a place in
the small but
distinguished category
called Twentieth Century
Extended Works for Chorus
and Orchestra Which Have
Received More Than One
Performance. Behold This
Mystery is suitable
anywhere that you might
program a requiem, e.g.,
either in concert or
within the context of a
worship service. It lasts
about 27 minutes in
performance. Soprano and
Baritone soloists are
called for, although a
Tenor may be substituted
for the (rather high)
Baritone part if needed.
The choral parts are not
terribly difficult but
this is an extended work,
probably equivalent to
five or six typical
anthems. Instrumental
parts are not virtuosic;
collegiate and
professional ensembles
should have no trouble
preparing the piece with
only a few rehearsals.

MUSIC. This collection of
recordings is designed to
enhance the exploration
of Lead Me, Guide
Me—Second Edition
and to be of help to
parishes in the learning
of new music. There are
three distinct CD sets.
The first, Rites, Psalms,
and Service Music,
contains music for the
Liturgy of the Hours and
rites of the church along
with recordings of new
and revised Mass
settings. The second,
Hymns, includes over 160
selections of newly
composed music, recently
authored texts, and
lesser-known hymns and
songs that are appear-
ing for the first time in
Lead Me, Guide
Me—Second Edition.
Lastly, the third CD set,
Lectionary Psalms,
recorded by M. Roger
Holland II and a group of
professional singers from
New York has 48 psalms
from the final section of
the hymnal. These psalms
use texts from The
Revised Grail Psalms set
by some of today’s
finest African American
composers. The recorded
tracks in these three CD
sets follow the order of
the hymnal and are
numbered using the actual
hymnal numbers. The
recordings are a
compilation of tracks
recorded specifically for
this project and of
existing tracks drawn
from previous projects
that are, nonetheless,
fully compatible with
this one. In all, we have
