Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934) Royaume-Uni Edward Elgar est un compositeur et chef d'orchestre britannique, né à Broadheath (près de Worcester) le 2 juin 1857 et mort le 23 février 1934. Son père était accordeur de piano. Quatrième d'une famille de sept enfants, il étudie la musique essentiellement en autodidacte et a du mal à s'imposer professionnellement. Il enseigne le violon. Il se marie en 1889 avec la fille d'un officier. L'importance de ses compositions est reconnue à partir de 1898 après la création de la cantate Caractatus, suivi peu après par les variations sur un thème original. Il est anobli en 1914 par le roi Édouard VII. À partir de 1911, il devient chef principal du London Symphony Orchestra avec qui il crée nombres de ses propres ?uvres. Après une période dépressive, il se consacre à partir de 1918 essentiellement à la musique de chambre. Sa femme décéde en 1920, entraînant un tarissement de son inspiration.
