Preludes by the Venetian
composer Renato de
Grandis (1927-2008) were
composed, largely,
between 1998-2002. It was
only subsequently that he
arranged them into 4
cycles of 12 preludes,
drawing also from earlier
compositions. Written in
a traditional pianistic
style, they are short
sketches which are
sometimes characterized
by musical thoughts,
sometimes by moods or by
natural phenomena. The
fourth volume presented
here is once again
divided into two cycles
of 6 preludes each, with
the first cycle paying
tribute to the landscapes
and towns of Friuli north
of Venice. $35.00 - Voir plus => Acheter | | |

Line, Shadow is a
response to Edward
Hopper's iconic painting
Road and Trees, a
painting donated to the
Philadelphia Museum of
Art by Daniel Dietrich
II, and the first Hopper
painting acquired by the
museum. My piece is in
three contrasting
movements, each referring
to and inspired by an
aspect of Hopper's
painting.The first
movement, Landscape in
Motion, refers to the
dynamic movement of the
landscape when traveling
in a car and looking at
the landscape passing by
in the window. Hopper
loved to take road trips,
experiencing America by
car, and in one of his
initial sketches for Road
and Trees, there was a
car in the painting. The
first movement tries to
capture that moving
landscape as experienced
in a car in motion. The
second movement, Brush
Strokes, focuses on the
darker forest in the
painting, as the trees
become denser and the
technique of brush
strokes creates deep
layers. There is a
spiritual aspect to
Hopper's paintings, a
kind of isolation and
emptied out space, and
the third movement, Open
Road, dwells on that
aspect of the painting
before reprising material
from the dynamic first
movement.- Pierre

Not hard, but
very impressive, this
David Shaffer original is
perfect concert or
contest material for
mid-level bands. It
starts with a stately
fanfare introduction
which leads directly into
the furious section. This
section features a fast
tempo where several
playable yet independent
melody lines are
intertwined to create a
very busy yet pleasing
musical landscape. An
adagio section follows
before a reprise of the
furious section leads to
a big finish. A rewarding
work that is a welcome
addition to any
performance!
