Pensant initialement se lancer dans la fabrication d'amplis guitare, il s'est rapidement rendu compte que ce marché était saturé et qu'il le serait encore plus dans l'avenir. Ainsi, tout en enseignant dans une petite université technique et en employant certains de ses meilleurs étudiants, il se décide à reconstruire et à modifier de vieilles unités d'effet, en commençant par un compresseur Ross. A cette période, l'industrie compte assez peu d'acteurs importants dans la fabrication à la main de pédales d'effets et son activité décolle rapidement, aidée par une réputation de grande qualité et par des clients prestigieux tels Brad Paisley. Des versions modifiées de l'Ibanez TS9 seront utilisées par Peter Frampton, Jon Heringtone (Steely Dan) et Ike Willis.
