The German music teacher, composer and a choir director, Gustav Ernst Schreck, . was born in 1849 as a son of a Strumpfwirkers. From 1863 to 1867 he studied at the Lehrerseminar in Greiz and worked thereafter as a teacher in Greiz and Remptendorf. After music studies at the Konservatorium in Leipzig, he worked as a music teacher at the Deutschen Gymnasium in Wyborg, where he also became acquainted with his Mrs. Emmy.
In 1887 Gustav Schreck became teacher for composition and music theory at the Konservatorium in Leipzig. In 1893 he was appointed as a successor of Wilhelm Rust as the Kantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. He held this post up to his death. Since 1901 he had been a secretary for a year before he created Neuen Bachgesellschaft. The Thomanerchor Leipzig appeared under his direction no longer only in the Leipzig's Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche, but increasingly also in concerts at the Leipzig's Gewandhaus.
