Added by magataganm, 16 Apr 2022 The Chorale, "O hilf, Christe, Gottes Sohn" (BWV 1084) by Johann Sebastian Bach is from the St. Mark Passion Pasticcio with the chorale text, "Christus, der uns selig macht", by Michael Weisse in 1531. The tune is also from "Christus, der uns selig macht", written in Leipzig c.1500 (Zahn 6285) and was first performed on 19 April 1726 (Good Friday). This work has not appeared in any early collections and is archived with other harmonizations: BWVs 245.15, 245.37, 283. This chorale survives by way of the St. Mark Passion Pasticcio, which can be viewed at www.bach–digital.de and is identified as D–B Mus. ms. 11471/1. Because of the various divergences in this setting from Bach’s chorale style (e.g. missing chordal thirds at bars 2, 3, 5, 8, 11 and 15, etc.), some question Bach authorship of this setting. Source: Bach-Chorales (http://www.bach-chorales.com/BWV1084.htm). Although originally written for Chorus (SATB), Strings & Continuo, I created this Arrangement of the "O hilf, Christe, Gottes Sohn" (Oh help us ,Christ, God’s Son) BWV 1084 for String Quintet (2 Violins, Viola, Cello & Bass). |
