Added by gorden-gibson, 18 Feb 2018 Infantry and cavalry regiments known as “The Buffalo Soldiers” were garrisoned at the San Francisco Presido in 1902. These African American soldiers were responsible for patrolling and protecting natural gems like Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon in the years leading to the formation of the National Park Service, effectively becoming the nation’s first park rangers. The soldiers seldom used the name, "Buffalo Soldier" amongst themselves, but they did accept the name as complimentary. |
