The goal of these five pieces is not only to reflect the spirit of the hymn tunes but also to illuminate various stanzas of the text most commonly associated with each tune. Consequently, the preludes vary in emotional and musical content, ranging from vigorous to ethereal. This collection offers both cellist and organist opportunity to display the wide variety of color, range, and style of which their instruments are capable. The pieces are of moderate difficulty for both performers.
