Bresnick's award-winning Conspiracies is an exploration of the flute's broad capacity for music-making, using spatial concepts and contemporary techniques. Written for solo flute and "four other flutes," it can be presented by five live performers or by a solo flute and pre-recorded tracks. Conspiracies has been recorded by Robert Dick (1982) and more recently by Patti Monson (2000), a one-time student of Dick's.

Quatre Pièces pour trois Flûtes avec une 4è Flûte ad lib.-Flutes En Vacances by Jacques Castérède was written in 1962 for three or four Flutes. Each Flute part is quite difficult on this quartet and would be for advanced-intermediate / advanced flautists. This piece features four sections each one expressing a different mood: Flûtes Pastorales is quite calm with some enthusiastic highlights Flûtes Joyeuses reflects a very joyful part with a small dance in the middle Flûtes rêveuses sounds timeless and reminiscent of a theme of Castérède’s 'Twelve Studies' and Flûtes Légères has a fast and lightmelody. Jacques Castérède (1926-2014) is a renowned composer and pianist. He has won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953 and has composed numerous melodic pieces including ballets concertos symphonies ensemble and chamber music.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Programme Note:The title should rightly be pronounced in French (same spelling) as the piece was composed for and is dedicated to French flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal who premiered ILLUMINATIONS in connection withhimreceiving the Danish Sonnings Musikpris in 1978.The title reflects my endeavour to create different illuminative effects in sound for which the flute is an excellent medium with its apparent ability to transform lightphenomena into musical shapes. Tue music in ILLUMINATIONS sometimes sounds like glitteringreflections sometimes like a roaring bonfire. The absence of ordinary flutes in the orchestra further enables the soloist to shine above a darker orchestral background.
