The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101800.

The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3117400.

This work is a setting of Psalm 80 (Restore Us, O God) as paraphrased in 1673 by John Milton. The text is used frequently in the season of Advent (on the First Sunday), or would also be appropriate for Good Shepherd Sunday in the Season of Easter. The majestic work was commissioned for performance on a day when new tapestries and paraments were dedicated for use in a parish and the music is knit together with a commanding viola part (with alternates for violin or cello). The instrumental part is available as a free PDF download from the Zimbel website (http://www.zimbel.com/). 20 pages Published by: Zimbel Press Minimum order quantity: 8 copies.
