for Euphonium and Concert Band. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke?s series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell?arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Répertoire / Orchestre D\'Harmonie

Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH / JONES NATHAN (Arr.). Tchaikovsky composed his twelve character pieces for piano, The Seasons, while he was writing his popular ballet, Swan Lake. Each piece in The Seasons depicts a different month of the year in Russia. The original publication of September: The Hunt included an epigraph at the start of the piece-a small poem by Alexander Pushkin. This energetic arrangement for symphonic band by Nathan Jones opens with an octave fanfare between the winds and brass. Tchaikovsky\'s colorful harmony speaks here, with passing chromaticism adding color to the music. The fanfare theme is transformed in the quiet central section, still shifting to the minor mode with short solo passages for flute, bassoon, trumpet, xylophone and oboe (cued in flutes). The segue back into the opening fanfare is clever, with the notes leading through several keys before concluding in the major with a short reprise of the initial theme. / Date parution : 2022-09-20/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Brahms Opus 40. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES / HOUBEN KEVIN. Johannes Brahms peut être considéré comme l\'un des meilleurs compositeurs de musique de chambre du XIXe siècle. Il était un géant dans ce domaine et un digne successeur de Beethoven et de Haydn. Le Trio en Mib opus 40 pour piano, violon et cor naturel est un chef-d\'?uvre de sa musique de chambre. En 1865, l\'année de ce trio, la mère de Brahms, Christiane, meurt. On sait qu\'il avait des sentiments profonds pour elle. Le mouvement lent porte l?indication de tempo Adagio Mesto (triste) et peut être considéré comme un chant de lamentation pour sa mère. L\'?uvre a été exécutée pour la première fois le 28 novembre 1865 à Zurich et a été publiée un an plus tard, en novembre 1866. Dans cette version pour orchestre d?harmonie, Kevin Houben reste aussi fidèle que possible à l\'original. Le résultat est une orchestration profonde et sombre du merveilleux Adagio Mesto.
