The commissioner of this piece, a conductor and friend of the composer, asked Satoshi Yagisawa to compose an item in the choral style of some of his earlier works. The result is the classic warm and gentle sound of Largo. A perfect moment of serenity for any concert. This arrangement of Handels beautiful melody was created as an educational tool for teaching students both the legato (sustained) style and the expressive quality of playing. Though these qualities of performance are not generally considered fun by younger students, compared to playing fast, exciting music with more technical demands, it actually requires a great deal more musical maturity and ability. James Curnow schreef ditarrangement als educatief materiaal om jonge orkestleden zowel legato(vloeiende) stijl als de expressie tijdens het spelen bij te brengen. James Curnows Arrangement des Largo für Blasorchester ist nicht allzu schwer. En 1738, Haendel compose l’opéra-comique Serse qui relate les diverses escapades amoureuses de Xerxès - représentation purement imaginaire du roi de Perse. Il intègre dans cette œuvre, l’aria Ombra mai fú, reprise dans diverses versions instrumentales sous le titre de Largo d’Haendel. L’arrangement de James Curnow est idéal pour mettre en valeur les caractéristiques sonores de chaque famille d’instrument, développer l’expressivité et le jeu legato.

Antonio Vivaldi stands, with Handel and J.S. Bach, as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular, he was the most prolific composer of his age - in addition to hundreds of vocal works (including forty-nine operas), he composed five hundred concerti. The Four Seasons are by far the best known, with the second movement, Largo, portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This new arrangement for concert band retains all the warmth of the original.

Antonin Dvorak first premiered his New World Symphony at Carnegie Hall in December of 1893 with the goal to bring American musical sensibility to European classical music. The second movement, labeled Largo, contained the melody that would later be identified as Goin’ Home. This well-crafted adaptation of that beautiful melody for concert band contains all the elements of the original orchestral version that has moved orchestral concert patrons for over a century. This slow piece was commissioned by the Chiba Prefectural Funabashi-Nishi Senior High School Wind Band. The band director, Tadaichiro Hirakawa, asked the composer to write a composition in his early chorale style, that can be performed with heartfelt feeling, rather than in his recent, more flamboyant style. Warm and gentle music, typical of Yagisawa is here to be enjoyed. Dur: 3:15 (Grade 3.5).
