Previously, for some nineteen years, he taught in Bronxville, N.Y. where, as Chairman of Music, he brought about an extremely high level of school orchestral achievement. he was educated at New York University and Teachers College, Columbia University. He has served as a field supervisor of student teaching for New York University and as a general music consultant. For the past two years he has been a member of the New York State Music Regents Committee. To the Conductor: You will find this work to be the conductor's dream. Parts are easy but impressive sounding. The total effect will give your orchestra that typical classical sound so satisfying to performer and listener alike. The title of the work is borrowed from a fragment by the German poet Friedrich Rückert.This fragment, this short sentence (which Rückert apparently neverelaborated upon) is the entire basis of the work. I was inspired by the meaning as well as the sound of these words.I perceive the meaning of the sentence as being a defence for the refinement of an individual’s personal gifts - far from the present hostility toward individuality and the senseless praise of impersonal success in society. Personal refinement can, so the fragment in my interpretation, at its best be accompanied by a deep sense of responsibility, and become an active and positive influence in society.The sound, the timbre, of the individual words and characters is employed both instraightforward text-sequences, as well as in the exploration of individual vowels and consonants as pure sounds. The soprano is often used purely instrumentally, echoing and pre-echoing discreetly the notes of the flute and the harmonics of the double bass, often imperceptably stealing their notes and altering them into human sounds, which then yetagain are absorbed into the instrumental tapestry.

The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra (2011) by Per Norgard. Premiered on September 19, 2013 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgards. Programme note: The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind, say, spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement.The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action. The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax the tempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimomurmur ends the movement - and the symphony.
