The cantata Ich freue mich in dir was first performed during Bach's second year as Thomaskantor, on the 3rd day of Christmas, and belongs to the so-called annual cycle of chorale cantatas. Here the focus of the composition is the hymn of the same name by Philipp Ziegler, in which the first and final strophes were adopted, word for word, in the first and sixth movements of the cantata. The soprano, which carries the chorale, is supported by the conrnett (Zink), which already at this time had become a seldom-used instrument. The joyful, lively choral movement with instrumental interludes directly follows the first aria, and begins with a marked, ascending motive at the word Getrost! (safely). The oboes d'amore which accompany the alto lend the movement a special color. In the second aria (for soprano), Bach again shows himself to be the master of text interpretation. The cantata Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ begins with an expansive chorale arrangement, for which Bach reverted to a proven model: The four voices of the solo ensemble take over the chorale, in which the melody lies in the soprano. For stanzas 2-4 Bach chooses the aria form with a highly differentiated scoring from movement to movement, ranging from a continuo Aria (1st movement), up to an aria accompanied by the violin, with obbligato bassoon and continuo. The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). Johann Georg Zechner is considered to be one of the most prolific Austrian composers of church music during the time of Maria Theresa. His ca. 250 surviving compositions, including works in practically all genre of church music, found a wide reception in many Austrian, Bohemian and Moravian monasteries and in pilgrimage churches. His Grosse Orgelsolomesse was probably composed in 1761 for the dedication of the organ in the monastery at Gottweig. As in other of his late works, the strict royal style, which essentially characterizes Zechner's compositions, is tempered through the use of elements of the galant style of composition. The cantata is one of six surviving cantatas for inaugurations of the Leipzig Town Council from the pen of Johann Sebastian Bach. â??Hail! bright Cecilia, hail to thee. Great patroness of us and harmony!â? â?? this exclamation opens the final chorus of Henry Purcellâ??s eponymous Ode to St. Cecilia from 1692. A paean to the power of music, the work is one of the undoubted masterpieces of English choral odes of that time. A resolution of the Musical Society of London in 1683 launched the great tradition of annual celebrations for St. Ceciliaâ??s Day (November 22), featuring a church service followed by performances of specially composed music. Over the years, Purcell wrote several odes for the occasion, of which this example from 1692 is one of the most popular.
