Eugen
d'Albert (1864-1932)
enjoyed an illustrious
and colourful career as
both concert pianist and
composer. He wished to
include J.S. Bach's music
in his concerts and
sought the grandeur of
some of the large secular
organ works. The
transcriptions he made
for this purpose are
arguably better than the
numerous Bach
transcriptions made by
his contemporaries.
D'Albert's versions of
eight secular masterworks
present them remarkably
close to their original
form, yet perfectly
matched to the modern
piano. At times, they
make very considerable
technical demands, but
the effort to master them
is amply
rewarded.
This
116-page volume marks
their first appearance
since they were first
issued over a century
ago. Many errors and
inaccuracies have been
remedied and English
translations of his
musical terms have been
provided.

J.
S. Bach (1685-1750)
was a German Baroque
composer who is revered
for the originality and
skill of his contrapuntal
and harmonic techniques.
He spent most of his life
working as an organist
and choirmaster, but was
also employed as a
composer a many different
Royal Courts. However,
his skill as an organist
and composer for Organ is
what gained him the
reputation he enjoyed
during his
lifetime.
This is
perhaps epitomised by his
Fantasia and
Fugue in G Minor
(BWV 542), often referred
to as the Great
Fantasia and
Fugue. It has
been edited by Sir
Frederick Bridge and
James
Higgs.

Mention the
key words Johann
Sebastian and Magnificat,
and one thinks
involuntarily of his
well-known Magnificat in
D major BWV 243 or in E
flat major BWV 243a.
However, during the time
of his tenure as St.
Thomas Kantor, several
times Bach also referred
back to older settings of
the Magnificat text and
arranged these for his
own purposes. Thus, for
the first time it can be
documented that in its
original version the
double choir Magnificat
in C major BWV Anh. 30
contained in Bach's music
library, which was
originally handed down
anonymously, was composed
by Pietro Torri. Torri
was the Music Director at
the Court of the Bavarian
House of Wittelsbach. For
performance purposes in
Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach
retained the substance of
the work but composed
additional parts for a
3rd trumpet and timpani.
For the first time ever
this splendid work
appears at Carus in a
printed edition. Score

Aft
er the really well-known
cantata Ein feste Burg
ist unser Gott BWV 80,
Bach's only other cantata
for Reformation Day is
Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn
und Schild BWV 79. The
central chorale movement
Nun danket alle Gott has
become extremely famous
separately from the
cantata. This movement is
characterised by the
catchy melody of the two
horn parts with their
interludes between the
lines of the chorale.
These in turn are taken
from the freely-composed
opening chorus, thus
forming a surprising link
between the movement for
chorus and the chorale.
The chorus and both the
arias in the cantata were
used later in a Latin
parody in the so-called
Lutheran Masses. Score

Bac
h composed the cantata
Jesus schlaft, was soll
ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps,
what hope have I] BWV 81
for the fourth Epiphany
Sunday, 1724. The cantata
is structured as a little
drama: In the beginning,
fear prevails. The seas
rage and Jesus is asleep.
The threateningly foaming
waves are vividly
depicted in the soughing
string accompaniment of
the tenor aria. Jesus's
words Ihr Kleinglaubigen,
warum seid ihr so
furchtsam? [You of little
faith, why are you so
fearful?] are set as a
bass arioso at the center
of the cantata; they
provide the turning
point. In the subsequent
bass aria, the towering
seas are silenced. A
recitative - Wohl mir
[Well for me] - leads
into the closing chorale
with its certainty Unter
deinen Schirmen bin ich
vor den Sturmen aller
Feinde frei [Under Your
protection I am spared
the tempests of my
enemies]. Score available

Com
posed in 1727 for a
eulogy and funeral
oration for Electress
Christiane Eberhardine in
the Leipzig University
church, the music for the
funeral ode is well-known
today above all through
reconstructions of Bach's
St Mark Passion, in which
large parts of this
cantata were probably
re-used, but of which
only the text survives.
With the funeral ode we
have one of Bach's
strongest and most
fascinating vocal
compositions. Although
Gottsched's text is
associated with a
particular occasion, it
is distinguished in its
literary quality from
many secular cantatas and
it is entirely
appropriate to perform
this impressive cantata
in concerts. Score and
