Christmas chorus from
Handel's Messiah has been
seamlessly pared down for
SAB voices by arranger
Hal H. Hopson, who has
masterfully kept the
essence of the original,
even in the polyphonic
sections, while
simplifying the parts for
smaller choirs.

Chorale
settings form a central
part of Telemann's
oeuvre. His 1754 setting
of the church hymn
Christus, der ist mein
Leben, based on Melchoir
Vulpius' melody from the
Hamburg Hymnal, is
especially well-suited to
display his mastery in
depicting the words of
the chorale. The
so-called Ausfullungsbass
(a vocal bass added to
the principal bass in
tutti passages) was
probably necessitated by
the acoustical properties
of Hamburg's
churches.
This
is the first Urtext
edition of this highly
successful chorale
setting which is based on
Georg Philipp Telemann
Musical Works. The score
contains a realisation of
the continuo
part.

Kuhnau's
Magnificat in C major is
- apart from his Biblical
Sonatas - considered to
be his most ambitious and
best known work. However,
as recent research has
revealed, there are
indeed many other
large-scale works among
his oeuvre which are
largely presumed lost
today, apart from those
that were published as
first editions. Until
now, only insufficient or
erroneous editions of the
Magnificat have been
available, a piano
reduction has not been
available at all. Beyond
that, editor David Erler
has succeeded in tracking
down new evidence on the
authorship of four Laudes
(insertion movements for
performances over
Christmas) and to carry
out their altogether new
placement in the main
work. He was able to
prove that Bach's
Magnificat directly
succeeded Kuhnaus's work
and that the use of such
Laudes was common in
Leipzig's parish churches
and beyond.

Organists
will be unable to resist
this abridged
transcription of
Strauss's magnificent
essay for symphonic
brass. Robert Gower
masterfully renders for a
solo performer the rich
harmonies and challenging
cross-rhythms of the
original score. Moreover,
he offers a versatile
reading playable on
instruments both large
and small: optional
registration indications
for a two-manual organ
seek to reflect the
antiphonal possibilities
of the two brass choirs
envisaged by Strauss. But
with this piece the
larger the instrument,
the greater the potential
for sonic
spectacular!

Text: William
Bartholomew.
Mendel
ssohn's setting of Psalm
98 was written in a few
weeks to satisfy a
commission in his new
position as general music
director of Prussia and
was premiered by the
Berlin Cathedral Choir on
1 January 1844. As he
neither released the work
for publication nor
produced a vocal score,
his psalm setting did not
appear in print until
after his
death.
For this
edition the authoritative
Mendelssohn specialist
John Michael Cooper drew
primarily on the
autograph score with its
many subsequent
corrections and
amendments. In this way
it differs from many
other editions, which
tend to treat the
autograph as a
subordinate source.
Rounding off the edition
are an informative
Foreword and a detailed
Critical Commentary. The
piano reduction is based
on the first printed
edition, published by F.
Kistner and Evers & Co.
in 1851.
