Regis Allard, historical
organ of Saint Michel de
Bolbec (Calvados). Mass
in the 8th tone for organ
- Gaspard Corrette.
Processional of the Royal
Abbey of Chelles -
Guillaume Gabriel Nivers.
Romano-Monasticum Gradual
- Guillaume Gabriel
Nivers. Divine Office for
use by the Ursuline
Ladies of Dijon - Charles
Derey. Improvised verses
on the organ, Regis
Alard. Alternating
with Nivers's 'musical
plainchant', Corrette's
Mass sounds like a homage
of the organ to itself,
as it gracefully takes on
the role of preacher of
the Divine Cult.
Regis Allard was
trained by Andre Isoir
and Michel Chapuis (for
several years he had
private lessons with the
latter) as well as at the
Schola Cantorum in Paris,
where he graduated. He
devotes himself
exclusively to the
interpretation of early
music and participates in
numerous events centred
on historic instruments
in France, Spain, Holland
and northern Germany. He
was a prize winner in the
International Competition
of French Music in
Toulouse. His first disk,
with pieces by Heinrich
Scheidemann on the Arp
Schnitger organ in the
Stade church in northern
Germany, received a Choc
from Le Monde de la
Musique. His latest
recording, J. S. Bach's
Art of the Fugue under
the Hortus label
performed on the new
instrument of the church
Saint Louis en l'isle in
Paris, received critical
praise. Ad Limina
This group of women
cantors, all trained in
the Conservatory,
themselves music
teachers, choir
directors, soloists, come
from either side of the
French-Swiss border,
whence the name Ad
Limina, which means 'at
the border'. This
ensemble pursues a novel
exploration of the paths
of religious music, from
the baroque period to our
day, with emphasis on
Gregorian plainchant and
European music from the
19th century to
contemporary
creation.

Die
vorliegende Suite fur die
Orgel ist eine freie
Bearbeitung von
Kompositionen, die Henry
Purcell (1659-1695) -
1679 Organist an der
Westminster Abbey in
London, 1682 einer der
Organisten an der Chapel
Royal - fur das Cembalo
komponiert hat. Die hier
zusammengestellten Stucke
wurden den
Cembalokompositionen
entnommen, die William
Barclay Squire 1895 im
Rahmen der Gesamtausgabe
der Werke Purcells
(London 1878-1928)
herausgegeben hat.
Vorangestellt wurde der
Auswahl eine vom
Herausgeber nach Motiven
Purcells geschriebene
Introduktion. Von einigen
der in dieser Suite
enthaltenen Satze gibt es
bereits Bearbeitungen fur
die Orgel. Abgesehen von
der andersartigen
Zusammenstellung der
Satze und ihrer
Einleitung durch eine
Introduktion nach Motiven
Purcells unterscheidet
sich die vorliegende
Ausgabe durch eine
grossere Freiheit des
Tonsatzes gegenuber dem
Original. Diese hat der
Herausgeber ganz bewusst
gewahlt, weil er der
Meinung ist, dass in
diesem Fall eine enge
Anlehnung an das Original
dem Wesen und den
Eigenarten des
Instrumentes, fur das die
Bearbeitung erfolgt,
nicht gerecht zu werden
vermag. Da bei den
deutschen Orgeln die
Funktion der Manuale
unterschiedlich ist, moge
man die angegebene
Manualverteilung nicht
starr, sondern sinngemass
anwenden. Die
Pralltriller sollen in
der Regel mit der
diatonischen Obersekunde
beginnen; die Mordente
dagegen sind stets mit
der kleinen Untersekunde
auszufuhren. Friedrich
Hogner, Munchen, im
Fruhjahr 1970.

Radegund
Variations (2017) was
written for and is
dedicated to Hartmut
Siebmanns, cantor and
organist in Possneck, in
the Thuringia region of
Germany. This work was
inspired by the life of
Radegund (ca. 520-587),
who was a Thuringian
princess (and later
Frankish queen) most
famous for founding the
Abbey of the Holy Cross
in Poitiers, France. The
piece begins with an
original theme: its
contemporary view of
ancient modality
represents looking back
from the present time
into Radegund's era. The
theme is followed by six
contrasting variations,
inspiration for which are
drawn from events in
Radegund's life: her
marriage and joining the
Frankish court (1st
variation); her flight
from the court (after the
murder of her brother) to
seek protection from the
church (2nd variation);
her devotion to the needy
(3rd variation); her
friendship with the poet
Venantius Fortunatus and
her commissioning of his
sacred poem Vexilla Regis
(4th variation); her
gifts of healing (5th
variation); and the
building of the abbey
(6th variation).

Bednall's
creation, rooted in the
tradition of French organ
improvisation, tenderly
evokes the mysterious
beauty of Wells
Cathedral's remarkable
'Jesse Window'. The
radiant music ebbs and
flows calmly, moving
through freely expressive
passages of rich harmony,
before closing with
gentle murmurs at the top
of the instrument.
