French Horn,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549438 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3494249. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549438). Score: 7 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25 Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. Dvořák Background AntonÃn Dvořák (1841 –1904) was, of course, a composer from Czechoslovakia. As a matter of fact, he was among the first Bohemian composers to attain universal recognition. It is important to realize that the late Romantic Nationalist period featured composers who used traditional and folk elements to portray the character of their nation. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia).  Dvořák relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music. Ascent to Fame Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched. International Status Dvořák visited England upon invitation nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio. United States Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895.

French Horn,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416182 Composed by Franz Schumbert. Arranged by Layne Anspach. Classical. Score and part. 14 pages. Songburd Music #997866. Published by Songburd Music (A0.1416182). FRANZ SCHUBERT was an Austrian composer native to the cosmopolitan city of Vienna, colorfully called the “City of Music†as so many other non-native musicians composed or performed there, while others such as Mozart and Beethoven called it home.  While only 20 years of age in the year of 1814 Schubert composed a remarkable number of lieder (songs), drawing upon the works of many different poets of the period, which eventually connected him with the poems of Johann Goethe.  This lead Schubert in the year of 1815 to compose the well-known Erlkönig, op. 1 D. 328, based upon Goethe’s poem Der Erlköning, which was taken and revised from a widely told Scandinavian folk tale about a sinister daughter of a forest-dwelling Elf King. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a poet, playwright and novelist who is thought to have been influenced by the Sturm und Drang literary movement, becoming perhaps one of the greatest authors in the German language whose works have had a lasting impression on Western literature to this day.  Notably, it ought to be mentioned that many of his poems were set to music by the likes of Mozart, Liszt, Wagner, Mahler, Berlioz, Beethoven and of course Schubert, who used Goethe’s poem, Der Erlkönig, to produce one of his more fanciful art songs that depicts the death of a child who is attacked by the “king of the elves,†a mystical being who lingers in the woods only to stalk little children and kill them with a touch of his hand. The story of the Erlkönig is considered by some to have come from the Danish folk ballad Elveskud, and that Goethe’s variant was inspired by a work written by the philosopher, Johann Gottfried von Herder.  It tells the story of a boy who is being carried home by his father during the night, and the child hears noises and seems to see things in the woods, while the father attempts to comfort the son by explaining away the things that scare him, all the while riding ever faster on horseback, only in the end to discover that his son has died. (The Erlkönig translates literally from the German as “Alder King†rather than the commonly used “Elf King.â€)For this arrangement, German lyrics are included to assist the performer in connecting the music to the thoughts, feelings, and specific moments expressed in the words that might otherwise be lost if not aligned with the music.  Noting that changes in mood or tone of the music are better understood when aligned with the words, and by including the lyrics, the performer can phrase a passage while having a guide to see the end of the musical line. Romantic lieder allows for rubato in performance, as playing the piece exactly as written on the page will result in a less inspiring rendition.  To match the horn’s register with the vocal line, the piano part required alterations by moving some notation higher in the register.

French Horn,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416186 Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Layne Anspach. Classical. Score and part. 43 pages. Songburd Music #997870. Published by Songburd Music (A0.1416186). RICHARD STRAUSS was a much-celebrated German composer and conductor who is understood by many to have captured the essence of the German Period of Romanticism and his works encompass almost every type of compositional form, noting that many of his compositions became standards of the operatic and orchestral repertoire.  While being personally recognized as one of the leading conductors in Western Europe, and internationally as well, he is also known for his lieder (songs), noting also that Strauss is thought to have composed most of these songs with the voice of his wife in mind, writing them for voice and piano accompaniment.   As the story is sometimes told, it was Ludwig Thuille, also a prominent Austrian operatic composer, who introduced Strauss to the poetry of Hermann von Gilm, Austrian lawyer and poet, whose authored works caught Strauss’ attention.  Strauss’ admiration for Gilm’s work eventually brought him to compose a series of eight art songs found in Gilm’s literary collection Letzte Blätter (Last Leaves or Last Pages). Strauss’ completed musical work, entitled Acht Lieder aus ‘Letzte Blätter,’ op. 10 (Eight Songs from Last Pages), was first published in the year 1887, with the intention that all would be written for the tenor voice, and the collection is thought to contain some of Strauss’ most appreciated and respected art songs of the period. For this arrangement, German lyrics are included to assist the performer in connecting the music to the thoughts, feelings, and specific moments expressed in the words that might otherwise be lost if not aligned with the music.

French Horn,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549394 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3492579. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549394). Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore. Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many people call it Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. Overall, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is important to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel nevertheless began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded. Â

French Horn,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416184 Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Layne Anspach. Classical. Score and part. 62 pages. Songburd Music #997868. Published by Songburd Music (A0.1416184). ROBERT SCHUMANN was a German pianist, music critic and one of the great composers of the Romantic Period who, in an earlier part of his career, was generally critical of the compositional works for piano and voice of his day, and consequently the greater number of his compositions throughout the 1830s were written mostly for piano.  Then came the year of 1840, considered to be Schumann’s liedarjahr (year of song), when he composed nearly half of his life’s best-known works, featuring some of the greatest liederkreis (song cycles) ever written for voice and piano.  One of his widely celebrated song cycles is the well-known Dichterliebe, Op. 48, which is based on a fanciful story of a knight who experiences rejection and love lost, giving us an insight into Schumann’s interests as a ballad writer, melding dramatic irony with his introspective nature and musical style. Schumann’s talent for combining dramatic lyrics with pleasing melodies is clearly seen in the moving lieder (songs) of his repertoire, and his Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love) is thought to be the paramount work among his song cycles.  Achieved in part by drawing upon the lyric poetry of Heinrich Heine, a German author, poet and literary critic whose political activism among the Junges Deutschland (Young Germans) of the 1830s and 1840s instigated at one point the banning of his works in Germany, leading him to become an expatriate who spent his final years living in Paris, France. Notably, the Romantic Period in Germany is thought to have had its roots in the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) of the late 1700s and was certainly influenced to some degree by the French Revolution, which contrasted itself to the rationalism of the fading period of the Age of Enlightenment.  Thus, the ideological movement of the Young Germans, and its reactive stance to the Romanticism of the era, adds some contrast to Heine’s lyric poetry, which expressed personal emotions and the irony of love, solidified in his Buch der Lieder (Book of Songs) that was published in 1827. Divided into five sections, Heine’s Book of Songs dealt with issues of unrequited love, romanticism, and introspection, and it was from the more than 60 poems of the lyrical cycle Lyrisches Intermezzo (Lyrical Intermezzo) that Schumann found inspiration for his noteworthy song cycle, selecting 16 of Heine’s lyric poems for his Dichterliebe.  For this arrangement, German lyrics are included to assist the performer in connecting the music to the thoughts, feelings, and specific moments expressed in the words that might otherwise be lost if not aligned with the music.

Score and part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #5325949. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551635). Claude Debussy: Arabesque 1. Duration: ca. 3:30. Debussy's Arabesques are considered to be one of the earliest expressions of French impressionism. They are a suite of two piano pieces that contain hints of Debussy's developing musical style. Although they did not receive much attention when they were first published, they are now regarded as early impressionist standards. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys, achieving evocative scenes throughout both pieces. The Arabesques are important in the history of music as they represent a significant development in the impressionist movement.Claude Debussy was a French composer born in 1862 who developed a highly original system of harmony and musical structure that expressed the ideals of the Impressionist and Symbolist painters and writers of his time. He is considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Debussy's compositions, including his orchestral poems and piano music, helped establish the musical language for much of the twentieth century. Critics often credited Debussy with pioneering a genre called impressionism, although Debussy consistently rejected the term. Debussy's best-known musical arabesque is his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (1894).

Horn in F and piano - intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q15275 From the Idyll At Twilight. Composed by Zdenek Fibich. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Op. 39. Schott Music - Digital #Q15275. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q15275). The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and AntonÃn Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan KubelÃk played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Score and part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #5308693. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551523). Sonata Wq. 124 - 1. Adagio 2. Allegro 3. Menuett & 2 VariationsCarl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was an influential composer who worked during a transition between the Baroque and Classical styles of music. His approach, empfindsamer Stil or sensitive style, applied the principles of rhetoric and drama to musical structures. The duets composed by C.P.E. Bach are significant because they showcase his unique style and are considered some of his most important works. They are known for their unpredictability and expressive qualities, which were a departure from his father's style, Johann Sebastian Bach. The historical context of C.P.E. Bach's Wq 124 Sonatas lies in the mid-18th century during the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods. This period was characterized by significant changes in musical style, with composers exploring new forms and expressive techniques. As a prominent figure of this era, C.P.E. Bach played a crucial role in shaping the emerging Classical style, and his keyboard sonatas, including the Wq 124 Sonatas, reflect the expressive and innovative characteristics of this transitional period. The Wq 124 Sonatas are a testament to Bach's unique musical language. Their historical significance lies in their contribution to the development of keyboard music during this pivotal period in music history.

One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Bring your best espressivo and plan to rehearse the many subtle dynamic changes.Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. www.jamesguthrie.com.

French Horn,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549482 Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #3500069. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549482). Scriabin's Prelude in A minor, Op. 11, No. 2 is part of his set of 24 Preludes, Op. 11, composed between 1888 and 1896. These preludes are modeled after Frédéric Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op. 28, covering all 24 major and minor keys and following the same key sequence. The Prelude in A Minor is significant for its expressive and chromatic nature, showcasing Scriabin's evolving style, characterized by unusual harmonies and textures. Like the others in the set, this piece demonstrates Scriabin's early works, which resemble Chopin's style, before transitioning to more unconventional harmonies and textures in his middle and late periods. The preludes represent an essential stage in Scriabin's development as a composer, reflecting the evolution of his style and musical language.

French Horn,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844552 Composed by Robert Franz. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 6 pages. Phil Beaman #3517867. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844552). Robert Franz was a Romantic Era composer of lieder (German Art Song) whose pieces were highly praised by Schumann. When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges. Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato. This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire. You can definitely feel the fire and passion in this beautiful piece! This arrangement is not difficult to play, but is marked Early Intermediate because it requires musicianship to play well.3 minutes4 pages score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of piano reduction of full score.
