Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. While his scores for both 633 Squadron (1963) and Operation Crossbow (1965) had boasted patriotic, major-key themes celebrating the heroics of the protagonists, composer Ron Goodwin took a different approach for Where Eagles Dare, generating his main theme for the picture out of the initial notes of an ascending minor scale. Rather than celebrate the heroics of the screen characters, the title music embodies the single-minded ambition of the protagonists to infiltrate the mountain fortress of Schloss Adler and complete their mission, no matter what the costs. The composer recalled in a 1994 interview that some of this approach came from the filmâ??s director, Brian Hutton. For instance, he wanted music at the beginning of the film but he also wanted to hear the airplane engines approaching from the distance, which is actually why he started off with just the side drums playing quietly and then building up and getting louder, so that you could actually hear the sound of the airplane before the orchestra comes in. After the snare drum and the â??Aâ? section of the main title comes a melodically related fugal section that, the composer told Randall D. Larson in 1984, was an idea that arose from the â??concept of people following each other around and dodging away from each other...[which] gave me the idea of writing a sort of fugue-style theme...and then I used that in various ways for all the sort of creeping and following and chasing that was going on throughout the film.â?Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!

Fourth Symphony in E flat major Homage to Beethoven (2003, revised 2021), a Neo-Classical symphony based on Beethoven's sketches for his Tenth Symphony, like a speculative reconstruction. In 1822-1827, the fascinating Tenth Symphony (Biamonti 838) was one of Beethoven’s relatively advanced projects, but still it was at the beginning of its elaboration. The material is not quite abundant, and many secondary features in the concept sketches could have been modified, according to his working habits, should he have lived a few years more. For a true reconstruction, the sketches are too scarce, but they are also too good to be left aside and very stimulating for a composer, especially for one whose formation is indebted to Beethoven and who is willing to pay him homage. I have chosen a Neo-Classical idiom, an approach analogous to Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss (after Tchaikovsky). For such a work, the thorough study of fundamental articles on Beethoven’s projects and sketches (by Barry Cooper, Sieghard Brandenburg, Robert Winter, Martin Staehelin, Nicholas Cook, and Lewis Lockwood) was a necessity. Then, in 2021, the symphony was heavily revised, mainly to make it terser and truer to the sketches and to Classical practices For this symphony, all the thematic material is Beethoven’s, and also the general outline, as much as the latter could be inferred from his sketches. In its revised version, I made use only of the sketches clearly identifiable as intended for the Tenth Symphony and dating from 1822 and later years (most of the themes of its corresponding movements), but also of a few other sketches, most of them contemporary or relatable, unused or intended for other compositions: in the continuation to the second subject group in the first movement, in the second strains of the Presto and of its Trio, and in the transitions and the episodes in the Finale. The symphony has 4 movements and is scored for a normal concert orchestra, including 3 trombones. The revised version makes use also of a contrabassoon, to support the double basses and suggesting a stronger presence of the winds like in the larger scale concerts in the Classical era (usually with doubled winds).Total duration: 34 min. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1043121). I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and released on his album Going Public in 1977. Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976 after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975. It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977. Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976. The original version was recorded by Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with the Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by teen idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Johnston. Cassidy's version reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year. Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God, and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in everyone. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson. Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Cash Box said of Manilow's version Good work Barry describing the song as melodic, ballad-like beginning grows into an operatic crescendo, all done in clear production that all age groups will appreciate.

In a film score, there is often a piece called Main Titles that plays during the opening scenes of the film. Typically, this piece encaptures all the major musical motifs present in the score of the movie. As the name suggests, Main Titles of America portrays the major themes of America in musical form. The three themes the piece highlights are opportunity, freedom, and love.The main musical motif appears early in the piece and is supported with eight notes and triplets from the harp and violas. The overall feel is adventurous and hopeful with energy building. The main motif is prominent throughout the piece, and almost every instrument plays the motif at some point. Each instrument represents a unique person who has the opportunity to flourish in America. The second motif represents freedom, and it is primarily played by the woodwinds. In particular, the flutes with their light, feathery sound help to express this idea. This motif is more playful and adds a touch of cheerfulness and lightness to the piece. It reflects the happiness of being free. The main motif and the second motif are intertwined just like opportunity and freedom. The third motif represents love and is prominent in the second half of the piece. The same eighth notes and triplets provide seamless energy and flow. While still maintaining a dream-like feel, this motif is meant to sound more grandiose and emotional. The sweeping themes and romantic harmonies are intended to portray the feeling of an ideal relationship. The piece ends with a triumphant brass chorale (the same motif from the beginning) followed by a tutti chord. It’s the musical representation of look how far we’ve come! It is interesting to note that Albeniz almost completely abandoned the composition of piano works after La Vega, although his fame was mainly focused on the works for this instrument. According to the autographed dating found on the last page of the manuscript, Albeniz finished La Vega at first on January 26, 1897 in Auteuil, in a Paris neighborhood. In the course of the following weeks, decided to make profound changes. He deleted the last five pages of the Vega, added six at the beginning and composed a different ending of seven more pages. This revision ended in Paris on February 14, 1897, and Albeniz wrote down on the last page: La Alhambra, symphonic suite on poems by F. B. Money-Coutts: nº 1: La Vega. La Vega is an evocation of the Granada plains on the edge of the city, a musical reflection, as the composer put it, contemplated from the Alhambra Palace. Claude Debussy, on hearing Albeniz play the piece, enthusiastically told him of his wish to immediately go and discover Granada.

It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale.The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's.The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. This vital, Dionysian frenzy (in strong contrast to the Apollonian, severe contemplation in the first movement) leads only to its exhaustion and to the disorientated, slow Trio: first, an almost atonal tenor monologue accompanied by harp (on verses from Dante's Purgatory), then a quotation from Beethoven's sketches for a planned overture on the B-A-C-H motif, followed by a fugal section on the same archetypal motif and again a tenor monologue (on verses from Eminescu's Satire No. 4), this time with organ accompaniment and more and more tortured until the choral exclamations and the final cymbal clash. The first complete performance was given on 9 January 1904 in the Salle Erard, Paris, by the young Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes, who was already emerging as the prime interpreter of the new French music of Debussy and Ravel. The first two pieces were completed in 1903, but the third derives from an earlier group of pieces from 1894, collectively titled Images, which remained unpublished until 60 years after Debussy’s death, when they were printed as Images (oubliées). Estampes marks an expansion of Debussy’s keyboard style: he was apparently spurred to fuse neo-Lisztian technique with a sensitive, impressionistic pictorial impulse under the impact of discovering Ravel’s Jeux d’eau, published in 1902. The opening movement, ‘Pagodes’, is Debussy’s first pianistic evocation of the Orient and is essentially a fixed contemplation of its object, as in a Chinese print. Yet he wrote of this piece (to his friend Pierre Louÿs, to whom it was dedicated), ‘if this isn’t the music they play in Granada, so much the worse for Granada!’-and there is no debate about the absolute authenticity of Debussy’s use of Spanish idioms here. Falla himself pronounced it ‘characteristically Spanish in every detail’. ‘La soirée dans Grenade’ is founded on an ostinato that echoes the rhythm of the habanera and is present almost throughout. Beginning and ending in almost complete silence, this dark nocturne of warm summer nights builds powerfully to its climaxes. The melodic material ranges from a doleful Moorish chant with a distinctly oriental character to a stamping, vivacious dance-measure, taking in brief suggestions of guitar strumming and perfumed Impressionist haze. There is even a hint of castanets near the end. The piece fades out in a coda that seems to distil all the melancholy of the Moorish theme and a last few distant chords of the guitar. ‘Jardins sous la pluie’ is based on the children’s song ‘Nous n’rons plus au bois’ (We shan’t go to the woods): its original 1894 form was in fact entitled Quelques aspects de ‘Nous n’rons plus au bois’. The two versions are really two distinct treatments of the same set of ideas, but in ‘Jardins sous la pluie’ Estampes the earlier piece has been entirely rethought. The whole conception is more impressionistic, and subtilized. The teeming semiquaver motion is more all-pervasive, the tunes (for Debussy has added a second children’s song for treatment, ‘Do, do, l’enfant do’) more elusive and tinged sometimes with melancholy or nostalgia. Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Horseshoe Curve was composed for the Altoona Area High School Orchestra, Kelly Detwiller, director. This composition is in three movements. The first movement, Man Versus Nature, is moderate and intense, paying tribute to the designers and laborers for the Horseshoe Curve project. It uses parts of three railroad songs, Drill, Ye Tarriers by Thomas Casey, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, and Dinah. The introduction uses phrases from I’ve Been Working on the Railroad that are disguised by ending on a different note than the traditional song. The main body of the movement uses phrases of Drill, Ye Tarriers that are interrupted by phrases of the other two songs as well as original material by the composer. It developes in intensity as the movement progresses, but ends softly, suggesting the ongoing labor of the project. The second movement, Doorway to the West is a celebration of the completion of the project. It uses She’ll Be Coming ’Round the Mountain in fragments, in canon, and as a basis for a hoe down and a waltz variation. The celebration becomes wild at the end as all ideas come together at once. The third movement, Growth and Opportunity is slow and expansive in the beginning with a quicker section at the end. It depicts the growth of Altoona as a result of Horseshoe Curve. The initial idea that appears in the celli is expanded and developed, therefore evolving into a constant stream of new, but related, ideas.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746748). ere at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for orchestra, and my first original composition (opus 1), for full symphony orchestra.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional orchestras alike; with some challenging and interesting string, woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

This is an attempt to complete them in his style and for the first time. I. Allegro ma non troppoFor the first movement a full score of the first 2 minutes (79 measures) exist and additionally sketches for further passages were included and elaborated here: m. 81 - 93: transition to the 2nd theme m. 107 - 116: 2nd theme m. 146 - 150 ending of the exposition m. 152 - 165: beginning of the development m. 196 - 204: canonic passage 11:57 II. Andante cantabile The very melodious sketches for the first 2:15 minutes were worked out to a second movement with variations on the main theme and a more passionate middle part. This publication includes the score and parts and is addressed to any conductors and orchestras willing to play unknown, excellent music by Mendelssohn put in a context true to his idiom.
