Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.776942 Composed by Traditional English Melody, Isaac Watts. Arranged by Leonora Hardy. Christian,Religious,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Leonora Hardy #6473959. Published by Leonora Hardy (A0.776942). An easily learned arrangement for the church pianist who wants to have a more flowing style of music to accompany congregational singing. To that end, the melody is retained, as well as traditional timing to help singers even if a song leader is not present. It is also suitable for preludes or offertories. Lyrics are included as well as chords for guitar. Intermediate level. Right hand melody. Hymn.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976713 Composed by Isaac Watts / Lowell Mason. Arranged by Robert Myers. Christian,Holiday,Love,Sacred. Score and parts. 49 pages. WheatMyer Music #4775721. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976713). When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody. This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion. The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses' anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together. The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The instrumental accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful, suitable for high school or higher level players. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet it does not compromise on artistic expression. This is the orchestral accompaniment for the choral octavo version sold separately. This version includes full score and all instrumental parts.

Here are some interesting facts about the song:Originally a Poem: Joy to the World was originally a poem, not a song.Inspiration: Isaac Watts wrote the lyrics with Jesus's second coming in mind, not His first coming, inspired by the latter half of Psalm 98.Musical Origin: The melody for Joy to the World is attributed to George Frideric Handel and arranged by Lowell Mason. The first four notes of the song are the same as the chorus Lift your heads from Handel's Messiah. Not Intended as a Christmas Carol: The song wasn't intended to be a Christmas carol, as its original version had no such link with Christmas. It adapted Psalm 98, celebrating Jesus's role as King of his church and the world.Popularity: Since 1719, Joy to the World has remained one of the most-published hymns in Northern America and has been recorded by various artists.Joy to the World is a timeless piece of art that has withstood the test of time and continues to be enjoyed and appreciated by generations, making it a significant part of Christmas celebrations.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1243842 Composed by Charles Wesley and Trad. Scottish Melody. Arranged by Nathaniel Hontz. Christian,Folk,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. 10 pages. TigerSong LLC #838814. Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1243842). Charles Wesley's poem Jacob Wrestling is better known by its first line, Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.
