"Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" appeared first as a hymn in 1897 when it was written by Enoch Sontonga, a teacher a Methodist mission school in Johannesburg. The title is written in a South African indigenous language, Xhosa, and means "Lord Bless Africa". The hymn was written to a tune by the Welsh composer, Joseph Parry, called "Aberystwyth".
