This composition displays a musical interpretation of
an ordinary day in the life of the Greek God of Nature
known as Pan. The Flute line in this work represents
Pan while the motifs in the cello and double bass
represent his adventures and environments throughout
the day from morning to evening. Each key change and/or
time signature change represents a different moment in
time during Pan’s day; from his awakening and
pondering of what the day will bring up through his
flirtatious adventures with the Nymphs, and all the way
up to his evening rest.
I have broken it all down here as follows:
M.1-19: Pan’s Awakening and pondering of what the day
will bring.
M. 20-37: Pan’s morning bath in the lake and his
adventures with Water Nymphs. This section in the key
of e flat major is both playful and alluring.
M.38-56: Pan’s early morning run in the meadow. A
moderately paced section in 6/8 time representing
Pan’s joy as he frolics through the meadow.
M.57-75: Pan is taking his afternoon nap when at the
end of the section he is violently awakened. Pan was
well known for his temper tantrums and chaos that
followed such an event. The word Panic is derived from
this exact scenario.
M.76-112: Here Pan is seen going on a rampage of anger
from being woken up from his nap; this fast paced
section is twice as long as the others.
M.113-131: Pan enjoys a moderately paced late evening
walk in the forest and he reflects carefully upon his
day as well as ways to trick unwary travelers.
M. 131-150: Pan lays down to sleep reflecting upon the
events of his day.
