The patriotic American song "America the Beautiful" has
lyrics written by Katharine Lee Bates, and music
composed by the church organist and choirmaster Samuel
A. Ward. Bates' poem was first published in 1895 under
the title "Pikes Peak". She had written the poem whilst
traveling by train after she had held in wonder the
wheat fields of Kansas, and the majestic view of the
Great Plains from Zebulon's Pikes Peak. Samuel A. Ward
had conceived the tune on a ferryboat trip from Coney
