Leonardo Vinci (1690 - 1730) Italie Leonardo Vinci (Strongoli di Calabria ou Naples 1690 - Naples 1730) fut un compositeur baroque napolitain.
Élève de Gaetano Greco au conservatoire dei Poveri di Gesu Cristo de Naples, il est embauché dix ans plus tard pour donner des leçons de musique au futur prince de Sansevero. Il commence à se faire un nom en composant des opéras comiques en dialecte napolitain, telles que Lo cecato fauzo et Le doje lettere (1719). Il en composera onze de 1719 à 1724, dont Le zite 'n galera en 1722, qui obtient un grand succès grâce à son style plein de vie et d'esprit.
Il se tourne ensuite vers l'opéra seria, avec Publio Cornelio Scipione, en 1722, puis Farnace à Rome, en 1724. Il composera avec succès près de trente-six opéras pour Venise, Rome, Padoue et bien sûr Naples, parmi lesquels Didone Abbandonata (Rome, 1728) et Ariaserse (Rome, 1730).
Successeur d'Alessandro Scarlatti à la Chapelle Royale de Naples, il fut à la tête de la nouvelle génération de compositeurs d'opera seria italiens. Il se différencia de son prédécesseur en simplifiant les mélodies, introduisant davantage de récitatifs accompagnés, mettant plus en valeur le caractère émotionnel des sentiments musicaux ou des personnages.
Son écriture musicale à la fois pleine de fraîcheur, de vivacité, d'invention et de grâce, est très souvent mise au service de l'extraordinaire technique des castrats comme Farinelli ou Carestini. Pergolèse (qui fut son élève) et Vivaldi imitèrent largement ses principes de compositions, et Haendel s'inspira de son opéra Partenope (créé en 1725 pour le Carnaval de Venise) pour créer à Londres sa propre Partenope en 1730 sur le même livret.

memory of myself in the
minds of others” was
one of his maxims. Among
his most famous works of
art are the Mona Lisa,
The Last Supper, and the
Vitruvian Man. He left an
extensive collection of
handwritten documents in
his notebooks. These
books, known as codices,
survive in various
volumes such as the Codex
Atlanticus, Codex Madrid,
Codex Trivulzianus etc.).
They include sketches of
ground-breaking
inventions as well as
studies and commentaries
which span the gamut of
human study. The
left-handed da Vinci
wrote the texts in mirror
writing. Through wars and
other upheavals, the
documents were scattered
throughout Europe and
much of his work
disappeared. Leonardo da
Vinci wanted to leave a
kind of encyclopaedia for
posterity and, although
it is estimated that up
to 80% of his manuscripts
were lost, some 6,000
individual documents
survive to this day, the
contents of which in many
cases were only
understood centuries
later.
