Added by alfredo17, 26 Jan 2022 Leo Portnoff (1875 Kiev – 1940 Miami, Florida/USA) studied violin in Berlin with Wirth and Joachim and became head of the violin department at the famous Klindworth-Scharwenka-Conservatory in Berlin. From 1906 to 1915 he was professor for violin at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. After the first world war he emigrated to Sweden, where he was conductor of a leading symphony orchestra. In 1922 he went to USA in order to teach violin first in Brooklyn and later as professor at the University of Miami. He was a famous violin teacher and developed new methods, in order to learn violin in a short time. As a composer he wrote some pieces for orchestra, but mainly he composed for violin: more than 20 violin concertos and many pieces for violin and piano. Among the latter are 4 Russian Fantasies for violin and piano. Here we present the Russian Fantasy no. 2, first published in 1931, in an arrangement for clarinet and string quartet.
