Tu scendi dalle stelle, is a Christmas song composed in December 1754 by Alfonso Maria de' Liguori, derived as the Italian version from the original in the Neapolitan language Quanno nascette Ninno.

O Bambino mio divino,
io ti vedo qui tremar;
o Dio beato!
Ahi quanto ti costò l'avermi amato!
Ahi quanto ti costò l'avermi amato!

mancano panni e foco[variante 1], o mio Signore,
mancano panni e foco, o mio Signore.
Caro eletto pargoletto,

Sposo mio, amato Dio,
mio Gesù, t'intendo sì!
Ah, mio Signore,

or te sol bramo:

Deh, mio bello e puro Agnello,
a che pensi? dimmi tu.
O amore immenso,

Dunque a morire per me, tu pensi, o Dio
O Maria, speranza mia,
s'io poc'amo il tuo Gesù,
non ti sdegnare
amalo tu per me, s'io nol so amare!
amalo tu per me, s'io nol so amare!

You come down from the stars, O King of Heaven,
and come to a cave in the cold and frost,
and come to a cave in the cold and frost.
O my divine Child,
I see you tremble here;
oh blessed God!
Oh how much it cost you to have loved me!
Oh how much it cost you to have loved me!

To you, who are the Creator of the world,
cloths and fire are missing [variant 1], oh my Lord,
cloths and fire are missing, oh my Lord.
Dear elected little boy,
how much this poverty
the more I fall in love,
since he made you still poor love,
since he made you still poor love.

You leave the beautiful joy of the divine bosom, [variant 2]
to come and penar on this hay,
to come and penar on this hay.
Sweet love of my heart,
where did love take you?
O my Jesus,
why so much suffering? For my sake!
why so much suffering? For my sake!

But if it was yours to want your suffering,
why do you want to cry then, why wander?
why do you want to cry then, why wander?
My husband, beloved God,
my Jesus, I mean you yes!
Ah, my Lord,
you cry not for grief, but for love,
you cry not for duol, but for love.

You cry to see you ungrateful from me
after such great love, so little loved,
after so great love, so little loved!
O beloved of my breast,
if it was once like this,
now I only crave you:
dear, don't cry anymore, I love you and I love you,
dear, don't cry anymore, I love you and I love you.

You sleep, my Ninno, but in the meantime the heart
does not sleep, no but wakes up at all hours,
does not sleep, no but wakes up at all hours.
Ah, my beautiful and pure Lamb,
what are you thinking about? you tell me.
O immense love,

So to die for me, you think, O God
And other than you, can I love you?
and more than you, can I love? [variant 3]
O Mary, my hope,
if I love your Jesus a little,
don't be indignant
love him for me, if I don't know how to love him!
love him for me, if I don't know how to love him!
