Henle Urtext edition score. One of Nielsen's early works Fantasy Piece In G Minor was writtenbetween the ages of 16 and 18 while he was a member of the military band in the Danish town of Odense. With this miniature he gave proof of his mature compositional talent on the one hand and of the socialisation through themusic of the classic and early romantic eras on the other. With its skilful interconnection of Italianate cantabilit and brilliant suppleness the two-part Fantasy Piece offers a welcome change in theClarinet repertoire. This edition is based on the sole surviving source long considered a copy in Copenhagen’s Royal Library which has since been ascertainably identified as an autograph manuscript.

paperbound-Carl Nielsen?s Fantasy Pieces for Oboe and Piano were composed in 1889/90. Having just gained a position as a violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra Nielsen had already experienced successwith his String Suite Op. 1 both as a composer and as a conductor. Several sketches and autographs bear witness to his intensive work on these contrasting pieces for Oboe which were to appear in 1890 as his Opus 2.The twomovements Romance and Humoreske are dedicated to the oboist Olivo Krause who played in the royal orchestra. His beautiful tone and virtuosic technique probably played no small part in the fact that these miniatures by the?young talented composer? took the public and critics by storm at their first performance in March 1891.

Carl Nielsen is doubtlessly one of Denmark’s most important and popular composers. This is no more evident than in his 1916 work for Piano Solo Chaconne Op.32 which followed a seventeen-year gap in his compositions for that instrument. It is a decidedly dynamic work in constant motion from the moment the simple opening theme begins through the crescendo and to the winding down and end of this piece. The twenty variations that form the core of this piece themselves have a varied range sometimes comparatively easy showing Bach’s influence other times he uses highly complex contrasts. This is a fine example of Nielsen’s work and uses mood and texture togreat effect making it ideal for concert or recital performance whilst the variations make it a clever training manual.

Canto serioso for Horn and Piano-Carl Nielsen's Canto Serioso for Horn in F and Piano. Urtext edition score. The Danish composer Carl Nielsen was one of the most original composers at the turn of the 20th century. Basedon the German Romantic tradition he developed his own musical language especially in his symphonies that are still played very frequently. He also however often turned to chamber music settings.CantoSerioso was originally written as an audition piece for the Copenhagen Opera Orchestra where the position of low Horn player was to be filled. This fairly short work makes the most of the low register and theinstrument’s sonorous mid-range making it a welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire for Horn.

Prelude-During the time that he was playing in the Orchestra of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen Carl Nielsen composed his two operas of which Saul and David is the first. Criticised as more of an oratorio than an opera Saul and David has not enjoyed many performances although this short majestic and psychologically revealing Prelude to Act II has become a popular short concert piece. It evokes the majesty of the court of Saul just before news arrives of the Philistine giant Goliath and hints at struggles both external and within the main characters. The dissonant Trumpets may have aroused excitement at the premiere in 1902 and still create a powerful effect in today'sperformances.

Dance Of The Cockerel (Hanedans) from the opera Masquerade by Carl Nielsen arranged for for Piano Duet (4 hands) by Esther Bobrova Lange. Arranger's preface: Dance of the Cockerel is a ballet insertion from Act Three of Carl Nielsen's opera Masquerade it is written for a large symphony orchestra. In this version for piano duet (four hands) I used the full orchestral score making sure that the essential orchestra parts were included. The melodic parts and the accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. The nuances and articulations are written according to the originalscore yet with consideration to the possibilities of the piano. In one of his letters Carl Nielsen wrote that Dance of the Cockerel is like a polonaise. Presumably he meant that it should be played with pride and dignity in order to characterize a young cockerel surrounded by adoring hens that fight for his favour. (Esther Bobrova Lange)
