Often shortened to ?Mazel Tov?, it is thought that the song was written by Sigmund ?Zelig? Mogulesko. Born in Romania, he was a larger than life character who dominated Yiddish theatre on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. Mogulesko was a childhood prodigy, equally adept as a composer, playwright, singer, comedian, actor and impresario. Mazel Tov was written for a wedding scene in one of his productions but has since become one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards.

Mazel Tov is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo, with constant variations in the accompaniment. Mazel Tov is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. This arrangement for advanced players aims to present Edvard Grieg's well-known piano miniature as faithfully as possible for a clarinet quartet. The only simplification I've made is to transpose it up half a step from the original D major. It's a musically satisfying teaching piece that will also delight audiences in a "solos and ensembles" concert, or as music for a wedding. The prominent Alto Clarinet part can alternatively be played on Basset Horn.
