Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England . In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs and his two suites for band are especially valued by wind bands around the world. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for clarinet choir by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly. The instrumentation is: Eb Soprano Clarinet, Bb Soprano Clarinet 1 - 3, Alto Clarinet (with an alternate 4th Bb part), Bass Clarinet, Contra Bass or Contralto. Although an alternate for alto is provided, the alto is preferred.

Sutartinės are traditional Lithuanian multi-part songs and have been recognized by UNESCO as ?Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity? in 2010. This piece expands upon a traditional Lithuanian sutartinė: ?U?augo liepa,? a story of a linden tree and a woman?s reverie.

The choral version of this piece is 1st-prize winner in the Lithuanian National Culture Center 2018 Composition Contest.

This large collection consists of thirty-two clarinet quartets, playable on four B-flat clarinets, or four of any of the same type of clarinet. "Bella ciao" ("Goodbye beautiful") is an Italian protest folk song that originated in the late 19th century, sung by the mondina workers in protest to the harsh working conditions in the paddy fields of North Italy. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 during the Italian Resistance, the resistance of Italian partisans against the Nazi German forces occupying Italy, and, during the Italian Civil War, the Italian partisan struggle against the fascist Italian Social Republic and its Nazi German allies. Versions of "Bella ciao" continue to be sung worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance.In 2017 and 2018, the song received renewed popularity due to the singing of "Bella ciao" multiple times in the Spanish television series Money Heist. The character Tokyo recounts in one of her narrations, "The life of the Professor revolved around a single idea: Resistance. His grandfather, who had fought against the fascists in Italy, taught him the song and he taught us."The song is played in emblematic moments in the series as a metaphor for freedom.

The fun thing about La Bamba is that it's been sung and played in every combination possible, and it's still cool. La Bamba is a Mexican folk song that was adapted by Ritchie Valens into a rock 'n roll tune. This clarinet quartet version is not rock 'n roll, but the song remains recognizable, and would be a nice and light addition to your recital program.
