Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England . In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs and his two suites for band are especially valued by wind bands around the world. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for flute choir by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly. The instrumentation is: Piccolo, Flute 1-3, Alto Flute, Bass Flute, and Contra Bass Flute.

Arranged  wind quintet.I Vow to Thee, My Country is a British patriotic hymn, created in 1921, when music by Gustav Holst had a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice set to it. The music originated as a wordless melody, which Holst later named Thaxted, taken from the Jupiter movement of Holst's 1917 suite The Planets. The tune is used forWorld in Union – the anthem with lyrics by Charlie Skarbek, introduced at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.It has been used for many other Christian Hymns.Notable examples are:O God Beyond All Praising – Michael Perry, 1982.We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God – a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudamus by Stephen P. This is my arrangement of Gustav Holst's arrangement.It is arranged for wind quintetThe French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredansealong with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear) Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols H133 (1916–17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships. This piece set by John Gibson for flute trio comes from Holst's Toccata for piano based upon the Northumbrian song Newburn Lads. It is 2 minutes long, so one entertaining idea would be to play it slowly first and then increase the tempo each time.

Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. Written by an anonymous hand, the text is found uniquely in Sloane MS 2593, a collection of medieval lyrics now held in the British Library.My arrangement is transcribed from Gustav Holst's setting of the text, which he calls Lullay, My Liking.It is number 2 from Holst's 4 Carols for Unaccompanied Choir Op.34Arranged wind quintetThe solo verses are played by oboe, flute, clarinet,oboe and bassoon together and finally horn.The refrain has been arranged in a differnt instrumental line up each time it is played.

Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

For the medieval man, convivial drinking was a part of life, and drinks were enjoyed with nearly every meal. The English beverage of choice was ale.
