This brilliant work by Johann Sebastian Bach is an adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's concertos while he was an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ. Originally written in B minor, Bach transposed it to A minor and, while preserving the melodic outline as conceived by Vivaldi for four violins, this later adaptation, from around 1730, for four harpsichords and string orchestra, is far more ambitious. In it, Bach has both tightened and expanded Vivaldi's counterpoint, enriched it with lusher harmonies and expanded the solo parts with greater complexity and greater clarity. The result is a composition that actually improves on the original work. Written in the standard three-movement concerto form of the Baroque period, Bach's Concerto for Four Claviers in A minor is a virtuoso piece for the soloists. Regis Bookshar has now rearranged the first movement of this concerto, marked Allegro, for a Flute Quintet, while maintaining the energy and virtuosity of Bach's original work. This arrangement is intended to be performed by accomplished players and may prove to be a huge challenge for many players, but, I think, it will be worth the effort. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (45 pages). In addition to this version for 5 Flutes, other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of Instrumental Quintets, some of which are in the original key of Concert A minor and some have been transposed to Concert G minor, making it a little easier for some performers, as well as numerous other arrangements in a wide variety of styles. The Soprano concerto is a modern composition based on traditional styles and can be played by quartets of all standards. The faster movements work equally well at the stated tempos or at slower or faster tempos as desired. There are 5 movements plus an introduction. The first 3 movements should be segue including the introduction. There should be a comfortable break between the 3rd/4th and the 4th/5th movement. Introduction – Adagio The dynamics should be exaggerated in the lower 3 parts giving large crescendos and diminuendos. Segue. Movement I – Allegro Set by the soprano, care should be taken note to take the tempo too fast as it gets a little trickier later on. The soprano cadenza can be ad-libbed and played at any tempo. The lower instruments should come off the dotted minim in strict time in bar 81. Segue. Movement II - AndanteWhile it is segue, take care not too rush into this movement. The lower parts should be played gently to avoid overpowering the soprano lead. Make the most of the accents. Segue. Movement III – AllegrettoThis movement should be played lightly in the accompaniment, particularly in the slightly comical middle section. Movement IV – LentoThe quieter it is played, the more effective this movement sounds. Allow the soprano to play as quietly as possible but the soprano should become animated in bar 235 before dying back down. The lower instruments can come out in the section at bar 241 (with the lead on tenor) but must die down completely at to the end of the movement. Movement V – AllegroTake care not to allow the accompaniment to overpower the soprano and try to avoid any accelerando for the last 9 bars.

After a short introduction there is an effective unaccompanied solo passage before the two instruments merge. The syncopated rhythms in the piano part add a modern touch, as does the slightly jazz-like writing for the flute near the end.This is a well-crafted arrangement which would make an ideal concert or competition choice.

This motet for soprano, tenor and organ without pedal ranks among the little, yet particularly valuable pieces of Rota for singing voice and organ. Originally, 'Tota pulchra es' ('You are completely beautiful') is a song of Mary from the 4th century which praises the immaculacy of the Virgin Mary. In Rota's version, the Latin verses describe the beauty of the beloved. At the end, the dialogue between soprano and tenor blends into a melancholy duet of tonal beauty.

This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Flute Octet, consisting of 8 Flutes, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. This duet in the pastoral style, based on a dance tune by the little known English composer John Maynard (c.1577 - c.1633), will enhance any Christmas worship or recital. ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSWhen I was a young child and I would ask my mother for something she would often, in the midst of all her busy jobs, say to me, “Oh, give me a minuet!â€, meaning jokingly a minute, of course, before she could tend to my wishes.  This meant that I grew up believing that a minuet and a minute meant the same thing and could be equally interchanged. You can then imagine my amazement and amusement at around 13/14 years of age when I discovered through my music studies that a minuet was in fact a type of musical form and dance! Therefore, it went without saying that at some point in my music writing life I just HAD to write my Mum a minuet! So, here is the minuet she so often unwittingly asked me for throughout our lives! She attended the premiere of the Flute, violin and piano arrangement in Bolton, UK, and was highly amused (and not a little chuffed) by the story behind the piece!Naturally, the piece is dedicated to my mother, Margaret (Pearl) Denny, and was finally written in June 2015 for Gary Woolf and the Banda Di Musica in Germany.Its duration is about 7/8 minutes long and it is intended for junior strings. Violins 1 and 2 are of moderate difficulty, while the Violin 3/violas, cellos/basses are simpler.There is a violin solo throughout (moderate difficulty), to be played by the Leader, but is not a concerto-style solo, but rather one that weaves in and out of the texture throughout the piece.The piece is in a minuet and Trio style and is light, tuneful and fun. There are 3 arrangements available:No.1 – School Arrangement: Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No.2 – Standard Arrangement: Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos, Double bassesNo.3 – Violin, flute and piano.  This arrangement is of a more advanced standard than the string orchestra arrangements and would suit players of approximately grade 7 upwards.Â

Published by Piper Publications (A0.1134023). The Sonata in Bb has been arranged from the violin sonata for flute and piano. As far as possible the original has been retained. Changes of register to accommodate the range of the flute have, in some instances, required a change of octave in the piano part. Both parts have been paged to accommodate practical page turns. No attempt has been made to indicate specific breathing places because the music so clearly indicates where a breath should be avoided. An excellent tip from my teacher, Geoffrey Gilbert, was to top up the air supply little and often so that there is plenty for a passage where a breath is not desirable. This Sonata is rewarding to play on the flute. It makes my pianist friend so much happier than playing piano reductions of the Mozart concertos.
