Flute,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1049312 Composed by Cecile Chaminade. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 9 pages. Phil Beaman #653682. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1049312). Cecile Louise Chaminade (1857-1944) was a French Romantic composer and pianist. She is often overlooked as a musician yet she was the first female composer to win the Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur, France's highest award. In 1890 she wrote a piano piece whimsically titled La Lisonjera (The Flatterer). It is a great example of late Romantic writing for the masses with an eye to publishing. She is lyrical, expressive, and emotional; using dynamics, wider note ranges, and chromaticism. It exhibits her trademark of being 'passionate yet virtuosic'. I have arranged La Lisonjera for Flute and Piano, keeping all of the traditional Romantic characteristics intact. I have added greater contrast between the themes, making the A theme appassionata, and reserving her molto capriccioso for the B theme which I also slow down a bit to allow for more playfulness. It is my own interpretation of articulation and simplified virtuosic passages. The accompaniment is my own reduction to allow the solo to shine freely. The arrangement is still marked as Advanced Intermediate because the solo part has a range of 2 1/2 octaves and many articulation markings. This arrangement is perfect for Recital and Repertoire as a performance of the 'overheated emotions' of the late Romantic era. Enough virtuosity to show the violinist's technique. Accessible and enjoyable for all audiences. (3:30 minutes; 2 without repeat) 6 page score, 3 page part.

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.844541 Composed by Robert Franz. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 6 pages. Phil Beaman #3516891. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844541). Robert Franz was a Romantic Era composer of lieder (German Art Song) whose pieces were highly praised by Schumann. When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges. Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato. This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire. You can definitely feel the fire and passion in this beautiful piece! This arrangement is not difficult to play, but is marked Early Intermediate because it requires musicianship to play well.3 minutes4 pages score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of piano reduction of full score.

Flute,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549486 Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #3500637. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549486). CONCERT FLUTE & PIANO - Score: 11 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 5 pages. Duration: 4:20. This is a popular recital piece that would work well also in church or school programs. Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing  Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

The Andante molto has hints of gypsy pathos amid lyrically supple sentiments, and the merry spirits of the Allegretto likewise have a darker center. Almost as long as the other two together, Clara’s final romance, marked Leidenschaftlich schnell (passionately quick), features a long-limbed melody over rippling pianism, developed with assurance.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844503). In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. Flute,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.549354 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3490015. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549354). This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Alto Flute & Piano, S0.661753. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance with minimal page turns for the accompanist. The duration with repeat is about 4:50. Score: 6 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. Instrumental Solo,Piano,Piccolo - Level 2 - SKU: A0.550931 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and individual part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888397. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550931). This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. The convenient 1st and 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. The progression is from Bachâ??s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubertâ??s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. Less known for this talent however, as you can see by this composition still very talented. This dance is full of his native flair, passion and fervor. This demands accomplished performers. Enjoy!

Fl. Pft - Advanced - SKU: F2.FM364 Composed by Alphonse Catherine. Edited by Jane Pembleton-Smyth. A set of three lovely pieces for flute and piano. Score and Parts. 25 pages. Forton Music - Digital #FM364. Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM364). ISBN 9790570482634.Flute and Piano - All three pieces are dedicated to famous French flute players: Nocturne to Paul Taffanel; Arabesque to Adolphe Hennebains and Serenade Melancolique to Georges Barrere. Nocturne was written in 1900, being performed subsequently in the Promenade concerts of 1904 and 1906 at Queen's Hall in London, with Albert Fransella on flute. Its style is still firmly rooted in the late Romantic period. As indicated by markings such as expressif and avec chaleur, this is highly emotional music with beautiful long lines and intense harmonies. It is thought that both Arabesque and Serenade Melancolique were written a year later than Nocturne in 1901. Arabesque has elegance, poise and a wistful character, created by the minor key. As you would expect from its title, Serenade Melancolique expresses all the tragedy and passion of unrequited love.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Flute - Level 5 - SKU: A0.910423 Composed by Georges Bizet, Francois Bourne. Arranged by David Heywood. Opera,Romantic Period. 65 pages. David Heywood #5204847. Published by David Heywood (A0.910423). The opera Carmen by Georges Bizet is almost universally considered to be the greatest opera ever written, and if you have ever heard any of it, you already know why - the lyrical beauty and power of the fantastic songs that are in it. Serious flute players have always included the famous theme and variations based on Bizet’s music, composed by Francois Bourne for flute and piano, in their programs, and it remains one of the most popular works in the entire flute literature. Here is a flute quartet version of this amazing work scored for Three C Flutes with optional Piccolo double in the Flute two part, and Alto Flute, with an optional Bass Flute part that copies the Alto part if you want to use five players and beef up the lower notes. Rest assured that this arrangement is not a simplified version - it retains all of the difficulty, passion, and energy of the original piece. The technical passages are divided between first and second flute, with the lower parts driving the engine that both adds lyricism and excitement to this energetic juggernaut. This piece is every bit as much an obsession as it is the ultimate program closer!
