Strauss and the Dance of the Seven VeilsThe Dance of the Seven Veils is a performance by Salome before King Herod Antipas, depicted in modern stage productions, literature, and visual arts. This dance is an elaboration of the New Testament story of the Feast of Herod and the execution of John the Baptist. While the New Testament does not give the dance a name, the title Dance of the Seven Veils originated from the 1893 English translation of Oscar Wilde's French play, Salome, which included the stage direction Salome dances the dance of the seven veils. Richard Strauss also incorporated the dance into his opera Salome in 1905.The concept of Salome's dance involving seven veils can be traced back to Wilde's play, where he was influenced by earlier French writers who portrayed Salome as a symbol of female lust. Wilde envisioned the dance as an act of unveiling, symbolizing the revealing of Salome's true self. He drew inspiration from Gustave Flaubert's story Herodias, in which Salome performs a hand dance to please Antipas. Wilde initially intended to follow Flaubert's version but later changed his approach.The idea of the dance being associated with veils can be linked to the popularity of veil dances during that time, which were westernized interpretations of Middle Eastern dance styles. Notably, the dancer Loïe Fuller was known for her veil dances. Wilde's play did not provide a detailed description of the dance, but it is commonly assumed to involve a series of veils being removed, symbolizing the process of unveiling oneself.Strauss's operatic adaptation of Salome also includes the Dance of the Seven Veils. Although the dance remains unnamed in the music, Salome's sexual fascination with John the Baptist seems to motivate her request, while Herod appears pleased. The visual interpretation of this scene can vary depending on the production, with some emphasizing its eroticism. Strauss specified that the dance should be thoroughly decent, as if it were being done on a prayer mat, but some performances have portrayed it in a more explicit manner.James Strauss's choice to program well-known orchestral pieces for the flute and piano stems from the technical challenges they present, both instrumentally and interpretatively. It allows the flautist to explore different timbres and a romantic style of playing, inspired by Orchestral mass sustained phrases and intense vibrato found in this repertoire. Transcribing orchestral pieces for the flute presents certain difficulties, such as playing loudly and with a full tone in the lower register or producing high notes that gradually fade away. Despite these challenges, the purpose is to challenge the flute's traditional role and explore its expressive capabilities through this repertoire.

Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763293). We Three Kings, is an arrangement for flute trio on the American tune 'Kings of Orient' by John H Hopkins. It is ideal repertoire during the Christmas and Epiphany season. In the first verse the melody is in the first flute, in the second verse the melody is shared between the second and third flute, with a short coda at the end to conclude this arrangement. While slurring marks have been added to the score to give a representation of how this arrangement might sound, please use your discretion to achieve the musical performance you desire. We Three Kings, like my other arrangements listed below, is ideal for junior and middle high school students and church music groups. The full score downloads as a set of parts and the performance duration is c. one minute and forty five seconds. Keith Terrett has done an outstanding job of injecting jazz and blues into these holiday favorites. The writing beginning in measure 13 of Ding Dong Merrily On High is outstanding. Check out the wonderful contrast in movement between the flute and bass. This arrangement of Xmas carols would be a wonderful addition to any future holiday program. Well done Keith! Have fun! Caroling (singing carols in the street) is one of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars, seeking food, money, or drink, would wander the streets singing holiday songs.

That is certainly what I intended to do with this demanding and brilliant piece! A flowing, powerful theme with sections of virtuoso dialogue separating it's appearances gives the instruments a chance to show their acrobatic abilities! Everything drives along, whipping up a storm of sound, until a very surprise ending, fading away in the distance! .

Ukrainian Folk Carol (often known by another name however) for Flute (in C) and piano (or use the enhanced free demo/backing tracks via request after ordering - details are given on your printed sheet music) by UK composers Chris Lawry and Keri Degg. New for September 2020 this is a very fresh take on this traditional classic and has been launched into a crazy swing/groove style! It's a great showstopper and a real joy to play. The piece includes playful interplay and new original material/solo/s. Ukrainian Folk Carol is just one of five pieces from 'Christmas Jazz - Volume 2' Flute edition (also available in Bb sax, Eb sax and Bb clarinet editions) which also includes; Deck the halls (Piazzolla-inspired style), The Holly and the Ivy - a smooshy smooth jazz ballad with original solo/s, Away in a manger - again, a gentle smooth jazz style, and O Holy Night (which has cheeky interplay, yet sweeping original lines too). All the pieces are aimed at early intermediate-confident intermediate level (typical UK exam grades from grade 4-6) so are achievable by most players (and don't take weeks and weeks of preparation; very important at the busy festive time!).There is also a 'Christmas Jazz - Volume 1' collection by the same composers (which includes; God rest ye merry gentlemen, Silent night, The first nowell, Hark the herald, and I saw three ships - all of which are available on SMP, or search for Christmas Jazz volume 1 if you'd like to buy the collection at a bargain price).
