RayThompsonMusic #6517961. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.554033). The Fool on the Hill is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 EP and album Magical Mystery Tour. It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The lyrics describe the titular fool, a solitary figure who is not understood by others, but is actually wise.McCartney said the idea for the song was inspired by the Dutch design collective the Fool, who derived their name from the tarot card of the same name, and possibly by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The song's segment in the Magical Mystery Tour television film was shot separately from the rest of the film and without the other Beatles' knowledge. Accompanied by a professional cameraman, McCartney filmed the scene near Nice in France.In 1968, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded a cover version of the song that reached the top ten in the US. By the late 1970s, The Fool on the Hill was one of McCartney's most widely recorded ballads. A solo demo and an outtake of the song were included on the Beatles' 1996 compilation album Anthology 2.  Arranged for standard wind quintet, the melody is taken first by the oboe, and then by the flute. Published by Tuning Fork Music PLT (A0.922021). It is our pleasure to introduce to you an arrangement of Responde Mihi, a motet by the great Franco-Flemish Renaissance-era composer Josquin Des Prez. The original piece by Josquin was a music setting of verses from the Book of Job, Chapter 13, verses 22 through 28. These verses are part of the 4th lesson from the 9 lessons from the Offices of the Dead that are published in the Liber Usualis. The Latin text is as follows:Responde mihi: quantas habeo iniquitates et peccata,scelera mea et delicta ostende mihi.Cur faciem tuam abscondis et arbitraris me inimicum tuum?Contra folium quid vento rapitur, ostendis potentiam tuam,et stipulam seccam persequeris?Scribis enim contra me amaritudines,et consumere me vis peccatis adolescentiae meae,Posuisti in nervo pedem meum,et observasti omnes semitas meas,et vestigia pedum meorum considerasti:qui quasi putredo consumendus sum,et quasi vestimentum quod comeditur a tinea.which translates to:Answer thou me, how great iniquities, and sins I have,my wicked deeds, and my offences shew thou me.Why hidest thou thy face and thinkest me thine enemy?Against the leaf that is violently taken with the wind,thou shewest thy might, and persecutest dry stubble.For thou writest bitterness against me,and wilt consume me with the sins of my youth.Thou hast put my foot in band,and hast observed all my paths, and hast considered the steps of my feet.Who as rottenness am to be consumed, and as a garmentthat is eaten of the moth.--This arrangement is about 6'30 in length, and has been arranged for piccolo, 2 flutes, and alto flute. The original ending has been altered to resolve in a manner so that this piece can function as a standalone piece.

Programme Notes: Fanfare: Grit evokes the brassy and rousing tropes of adventure movie soundtracks and Saturday morning cartoons, such as those written by John Williams, Shirley Walker, among others. Writing this piece was an escapade to my own musical roots for this was the first type of music I had been exposed to as a child: incidental music accompanying perilous quests, hairbreadth escapes, and other trials blocking the hero’s path to victory and redemption. I wanted to compose a piece that harkens back to the music that I first fell in love with, that opened up the gates of a legacy--symphonic classical music--that’s always been my solace in trying times. What is grit? Grit is the dirt between smiles and between barefoot toes. Grit is a hard-boiled detective. Grit is tilling the tough soil for the possibility of a beautiful blossoming of flowers. Grit is saying, See you soon, and making sure it happens. Grit is helping others when it’s hard to help yourself. Grit isn’t easy bravery, but the kind of courage you need to build up brick by brick. The obligatory synonyms: courage, bravery, pluck, mettle, and spirit. Finally, this composition, the fourth of my so-called Beethoven Episodes, was written to accompany Ludwig van Beethoven’s 4th Symphony. This work was written on his 250th anniversary, coincidentally during the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, and is the sum of my feelings wrought from that experience. Yet this work was completed on Canadian Thanksgiving, and is also an expression of all that I am grateful for, from the bottom of my heart.
