The original work was written in 2007 and is dedicated to Samuel Hernández, a clarinettist pursuing his Master's at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The composer, who was also the pianist in their duo, wrote it during his musical training at the composition faculty of the same centre. The work reflects the composer's extensive work writing for Samuel and other performers from the woodwind faculty in between 2006 and 2009, embodying the spirit of collaboration and musical innovation.The piece was later revised and won First Prize at the II Agustín Ramos Chamber Music Composition Competition, leading to the programme of its premiere on January 27, 2018, at the Agustín Ramos Chamber Music Festival in La Candelaria (Tenerife, Spain).The Toccata showcases a lively interplay between clarinet and piano, featuring rhythmic vigor and expressive lyrical moments. This is a work ideal for both, professional performers as well as students of the year before College level (ie. 17 years old)In the past, I had the chance to experience how performing with a musician who is also your personal partner (wife, girlfriend, etc.) can ease the process of merging together, enhancing the performance as if it were by a single musician rather than two separate individuals. So, when I was asked to write a piece for a duo in such circumstances, like the Rose-Gibbs Duo, I saw it as a great opportunity to explore the possibilities of blending, fusing, and merging musical content, sound, and other parameters into a cohesive whole.Therefore, this work explores the concept of musical discourse produced by the interaction of both instruments, which often have to align their accents, timbre, or dynamics to become one entity; as if melting together, as if two solids became liquid and fused to form a new alloy. Ideal para tanto músicos profesionales así como tamién para alumnos del curso antes del nivel Universitario de Superior (17 años aproximadamente)En el pasado, tuve la oportunidad de experimentar cómo el hecho de tocar con un músico que también es tu pareja personal (esposa, novia, etc.) puede facilitar el proceso de fusionarse, mejorando la actuación como si fuera realizada por un solo músico en lugar de dos individuos. Así que, cuando me pidieron componer para un dúo en tales circunstancias, como el Rose-Gibbs Duo, lo vi como una gran oportunidad para explorar las posibilidades de mezclar, fusionar e integrar el contenido musical, el sonido y otros parámetros en un todo cohesivo.Por lo tanto, esta obra explora el concepto del discurso musical producido por la interacción de ambos instrumentos, que a menudo deben alinear sus acentos, timbre o dinámicas para convertirse en una sola entidad; como si se fundieran juntos, como si dos sólidos se convirtieran en líquido y se fusionaran para formar una nueva aleación. Doris Magaly Ruiz Lastres was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1941 . In 1981 she graduated with a degree in Composition from the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, where she studied with Harold Gramatges, CÉsar PÉrez Sentenat, JosÉ ArdÉvol, FÉlix Guerrero, Alfredo Diez Nieto, Dolores Torres and Roberto Valera. Since then, she has worked as a Professor at the Instituto as well as at the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique JosÉ Varona and the provincial school of music, Amadeo Roldán. She has been worked for many years as technical advisor of the subject Harmony in the Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, and technical advisor in the Centro para la Investigación y Desarrollo de la Música Cubana. Her curriculum is published in prestigious dictionaries such as The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and «Diccionario Iberoamericano de la Música». Several of her compositions are included as part of the curriculum of the leading music education institutions in Cuba, among them, the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique JosÉ Varona and Conservatorio Alejandro Garcia Caturla. Her compositions have been performed at many festivals such as the International Musical Festival, Festival de La Habana, Festival Boleros de Oro, International Festival of Contemporary Music, the International Festival Donne in Musica in Fiuggi, Italy and the Festival Sounds of Americas, New York, United States. She has received the First Award in the music contests Concurso La Edad de Oro, Concurso de la Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, Concurso Amadeo Roldán and the Concurso de la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. She has also been awarded several medals and honours, among them The Medalla por la Educación Cubana, Medalla al MÉrito Pedagógico, Medalla JosÉ Tey, Distinción Especial of the Cuban Ministry of Education, and the Premio Anual de Composición of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba for lifetime achievement.
